- Windows XP >> xp home to professionalmy daughter's college has issued a notice stating it
cannot guarantee connectivity to the college network
using home edition, and recommending professional
addition. My questions are:
1. Is there really a problem, or can home be configured
appropriately?
2. If I need professional edition, can I buy the upgrade
only or do I need the full operating system (the box for
the upgrade does not list xp home as one of the operating
systems to which the upgrade applies).

- Windows XP >> Keeps asking for password.I have just moved an XP pro machine from a domain. I did that by changing it
to a workgroup and by changing the way users log on to use the Welcome
screen, rather than Ctrl-Alt-Del.
However, the PC seems to have remembered the old screen saver settings.
The screen saver is now set to NOT require a password on resume. However, if
the PC gets to the screen saver, after moving the mouse, it comes up with a
message that only the user or an admin istrator can unlock. However the
keyboard is inactive. It is impossible to enter a password. How do I fix?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Problems with clipsHi all,
I have been able to make my movies but only if I take small clips of what I
want, I can view it that way but I cannot allow movie maker to make clips of
my dig videos because it just won't show them. Has anyone had this problem?
So I end up with about 100 small clips of about 5 seconds each then add them
to the story board or time line and it works great, as long as I don't allow
movie maker 2 to cut my video into clips, I would prefer to take a long
video then have it cut but it won't let me and I can't edit them at all,
Please help me I am so confused,

- Windows XP Support >> google desktopi have 1 very big problem with my little borthers laptop he has instlled
google desktop search, this has somehow managed to link itself into windows.
its comes with some spyware and adware also does not let you delete it or
unistall it.
if u delete it there are 5 files with do not delete unistall if u delete
problem may occour.
so i delete the google desktop folder whole thing
explorer.exe does not load when i restart this means nothing after i log in
the only way around this is to do a sytem restore

- Windows XP >> Image ViewerIn my old ME system, while browsing through a folder, the program would show
a thumbnail of an image when I clicked on it. That does not happen in XP.
The only way I have found to view a thumbnail is to display the entire
folder in Thumbnail view . . . that's not what I want to do. I only want to
see the thumbnail of the image I clicked.
Is there some way to turn this feature on, or is it not available in XP?

Floppy in case the system crashes - much like in 982nd?
I was told that XP allows for boot up with THE CD (I
assume the installation disk). Is this true?
What if one can't and a floppy is the only option.
I do not have a problem w/the system, but one never knows
when a problem arises.

- Windows XP Setup >> error message on setup of xp proI am loading xp pro on an older system that doesn't
support cdrom bootability so I downloaded the six floppies
needed from the microsoft website and they work fine but
when the cdrom does the initial copying of files it
restarts and then I get a message "no system disk or disk
error". How do I get around this problem. The system is a
PII 350 IBM.

The performance monitor never shows more then 1 gig of memroy used up, yet
applications wont launch when its near the 1 gig of used memory. how to free
up that other gig so that I can use 2 gigs of ram instead of 1. Its like i
have 2 gigs of ram and 1 gig is wasted. also, why dont applications launch?
do i need to configure some swap space or something to ensure applications
launch?

- Windows XP Security >> Default Screensaver SettingsLately when we receive PC's loaded with XP from Dell the
deafult screensaver is set to lock the PC in 10 minutes
for each new user. We can change this as each user logs
on, but does anyone know how to change the default to "no
screensaver?

- Windows XP Support >> Missing infoI'm running winXP Pro sp2 with all updates installed. When try to view
"folder options/View/advanced options" in explorer the window is blank with
no information in it. Everything else is working ok. Does anyone know how to
correct this?

- Windows XP Network >> Have DSL connection auto login on system starupI just installed XP Pro on a friends machine. He has the type of DSL where
you need a username and password to connect to the DSL server. I have his
account setup after using XP's little internet wizard and now there is an
icon on his desktop that he can click and it will remember his username and
password and all he has to do is click connect and he will connect to the
internet. I was wondering if there is a way to make it so this happens
automatically without him having to do ANYTHING. It will just login
automatically anytime he reboots the machine. I thought of putting the
shortcut in the startup folder, but all that will do is give him the
connection dialogue box and he'll still have to click connect. Is there a
way to automate this? THANKS.

- Windows XP >> Keyboard not functioning in XP or Safe ModeTrying to bring my mother's laptop back after a virus. It's appears
to be clean but the keyboard does not work in normal or safe mode.
Mouse control works and so does everything you can click.
The keyboard does work in the BIOS menu and it functions with a BART
PE boot so it doesn't appear to be hardware.
I have deleted the keyboard from device manager several times. Any
ideas?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Exploerer ErrorRunning Windows XP home Edit. Every time I start desktop an error message
comes up "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Then gives the option to send to Microsoft. No matter how many times I clear
this it comes back. Internet is not working either. Any one got any ideas?

Windows XP Hardware >> No Sound
I lost my sound so I deleted the sound card via the
device manager. When I reboot my PC (to let Windows
reinstall it) I get sound when the desktop appears, but
after Windows reinstalls my sound card the sound is gone
again.
Any suggestions??

drivers for XP.

What I am missing are comparisons resp. tests between all these Anti-Spam tools.
What are the detection rates for a set of lets say 10000 typical eMails ?
How much is the percentage of false positives (=non-spam eMails which are classifed as spam)
Does someone know such a comparison web page ?

- Windows XP >> a click on folders opens command windowIn Windows explorer when I double click a folder a
command window opens and shows a command prompt and and
the path to the folder instead of showing the content to
the folder. This may of hapened after the last security
update. Any answers has any one else experienced this?

- Windows XP Support >> Icons Gone!Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum.
I did a quick search for my problem but couldn't find anything in
previous threads.
Basically, the icons for "My Computer", "My Documents" and "My Network
Places" have been replaced by the generic Windows "Unknown File" icon,
and I don't know why. I've run a virus scanner (F-Secure) with the
lastest definitions installed and it came up blank. I've not noticed
any other problems.
If anyone knows how I can get my icons back, it'd be much appreciated.

- Windows XP >> disappearing user profiles - HomeXPI have three user profiles set up. I am now having trouble with one of the
profiles - it is gone! The folders and files (favourites, desktop, cookies,
documents) still reside under "Documents and Settings", but when the
particular profile is chosen and logged into, all I get is the initial
screen as if a new profile has been set up. Any suggestions?

I wish to replace my 40GB Seagate HDD with a 120 GB HDD.
The operating system that Iam currently using is XP Pro.
1) Is there a way I can transfer everything (copy) from
my existing HDD to the new one, without having to re-
install Windows XP?
2) Will I need to reactivate Windows XP in that case?
3) In the vent I reinstall Windows XP in a new HDD will I
have any problems in reactivation? What information
should i provide the MIcrosoft Assistance team.
Would appreciate prompt assistance in this matter

When I attempt to do maintenace "scan hard disc drive"
it will run few seconds and the gauge moves a little, but
then it does not move any further. Its not scanning my
hard disc. Have no idea why this is happening. Also
starting to freeze up frequently. HELPPPPPPPPPPP

authenticate the user logon attempt. when the same user
try to logon from a 2000pro to the domain, everthing is
normally.
all the hubs and cable connections checked.
what can be the reason of this long authenticaiton
problem.

I have trouble shutting down my PC. It just goes to saving
settings, then the screen went blank but the mouse can
still be moved. Keyboard is off, but speaker & hdd still
have lights on.
I tried to Ctrl + Alt + Del but it didn't help too.
I have uninstalled Adaptec's Direct CD, updated Windows &
drivers..
How can I solve my problem?

I have set up 3 accounts 1 for me and 1 each for my kids.I have made them
all administrators. When I load some programs they will only play from one
account my acc. You can access them from the start menu of the kids accounts
but they won`t play.My account is the only one with password access. Can
anyone help??

disk letters on some of my disks and partitions change to
different letters after the system starts. Is there any
way to lock the letter allocation so that this does not

- Windows XP >> Goback 3.0I have read in many reviews for Goback 3.0 that it permits installation onto
several hard drives on one computer. I have tried many times to reinstall
Goback in the hope it will allow me to protect the extra hard drive I have
installed although at no time during the custom install does it prompt me
for protection of the second drive. Could anyone confirm that Goback 3.0 is
able to protect multiple drives in Win XP, or suggest any ways that I might
be able to fix this problem?
