- Windows XP Network >> 'Protected Object' query10-Jul-06
'Protected Object' query.
Accidentally went into "My Network Places \ Network Tasks \
View Icon for Networked UPnP devices" - via Explorer.
Popping up at top of list in right pane was
"ADSL Modem/Router IGD". Properties gave the device address as
"http://192.xxx.x.xxx/" (have x'd out the last 3 sets - in
case it's a private thing).
This revelation was fortuitous as I'd been looking for info on
accessing the Router in case a problem ever crops up here.
When dble-clicked object, got "Connect to 192.xxx.x.xxx" User
Name / Password box - for which I don't know the details as
this small home net was set up by some IT man over a year ago.
When clicked "cancel" or "OK" (among others), got message:
Protected Object. This object on the ROM PAGER SERVER is
Protected".
Question: How to access the Router without the rqrd info?
My knowledge on this is marginal at best but having read thru
and downloaded many of the excellent 'networking' solutions at
this forum over many months, in effort to pick up on the issues,
it appears that one of these days I may need to tackle
items like 'DHCP', among others - and I'd like to be ready
for it.
Appreciate any info whatever on subject.

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Home upgrade hangs with less than 1 min to goI have tried 6 times now to install XP Home on my
computer. (Compaq Presario model 168217-003 - everything
USB no legacy mouse or keyboard connects). Everything
goes great until it gets down to 1 minute to
go...uninstalling setup files. At this point the
computer simply hangs. On reboot it starts the entire
install over and then hangs at the same point. What can
I do? Can I go in with a WIN98 boot disk and delete
files manually? (I tried to delete the C;/windows/temp
file and it didn't change anything). I am not sure what
to do. This was to be an upgrade. I cannot even revert
to WINME (at least I don't know how to). I do not want
to wipe the drive and lose all my info. I would
appreciate any help!! Thanks - Jimmy

- Windows XP Update >> How do I cancel Windows Update SP2I clicked "yes" when my automatic Windows Updates icon came up showing me
that Windows SP2 was available for download. I have a dial-up connection so
this download is going to take at least 20 "online" hours just to download.
After 3 weeks it is only at 40% and I have since ordered and received the CD
for installing it. My question is How can I CANCEL the download and stop it
from continueing everytime I logon? I have tried clicking on the icon (both
left & right) and cannot get any pop-up menu to appear. Will the download
discontinue if I go ahead and install Windows SP2 update via the CD
installation software? I would appreciate anyones help and expertise in this
matter so I can cancel this download. I is causeing my computer to run slow
when I am online.
Thank You in Advance,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows only giving half processor speed...Okay... this is random... but, sometimes, Windows XP only runs at half my processor speed... I have an AMD XP 2100+ processor off of a SOYO Dragon Plus KT333 Motherboard..it should run at around 1.73 mHZ and sometimes, it does... other times it only runs at 866... Now, I thought this might be a problem with the clocking speeds, so I went into BIOS and set them manually.. and still, I get this problem... I've tried everything I know how to do.. and I cant figure out why sometimes it works right, and sometimes it doesnt....

Windows XP >> Starting NTBackup causes a "generic host process..." error
I have XT Pro. NTBackup used to work a month ago, however, when I try to start it currently it displays a dialog "looking for backup devices" and then shortly thereafter it generates a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services...." system error dialog. When you close this dialog everything except the screen background disappears and then it locks. You have to boot out of this
I thought that I could reinstall ntbackup.exe from the CD but I don't know how
Any help would be certainly appreciated
Thank you
Joe

- Windows XP >> After defrag - Disc is not formatted error.I just defragged my secondary hard drive (D:). Now when I try to access it
I get the message: Disk is not formatted. The disk in drive D is not
formatted. Do you want to format now?
I used the Windows XP Disk Defragmenter utility to do this. The utility now
does not see the disc at all. I have rebotted with no change.
What do I need to do to get access to the stuff on that disc?

- Windows XP Setup >> pro/100 nic driver and imagingIssue----I have a Gateway that includes an Intel pro/100
VE integrated Nic. After cloning image to this pc,
running Sysprep, I am then prompted to install the
driver.
Background info----We have 8 different models of
computers we that we use in our enterprise. Compaq and
Gateway. I have created one xp pro image, I use Norton
Ghost cloning software, and I have configured Sysprep so
I can load that image onto all hardware models. I have
tried locating the drivers in various places. I have a
drivers folder in sysprep, and also have tried using
drivers folder on root of c: in the source image. In
sysprep, I have pointed the oempnpdriverspath to these 2
locations. Also have added the install path to
devicepath in registry. All drivers load fine during
sysprep's run, except for one. I have a Gateway that
includes an Intel pro/100 VE Nic. After cloning to this
pc, running Sysprep, I am then prompted to install the
driver. At this point....If I point to the path listed in
Sysprep and the registry, the driver loads fine. Why
won't it find this particular driver? It's the only one
that won't load.
Any help is appreciated.......thanks

- Windows XP >> Windows update workaround?I am having a real problem with Internet Explorer -- basically, it won't
work -- and have been forced to use another browser. I can workaround those
sites that only work well in Internet Explorer simply by using my wife's
computer for them.
However, I am concerned that this will mean I can no longer update Windows
on my computer. As you know, if you go to the windowsupdate site using
another browser, it tells you to use IE. Does anyone know if I can work
around this, perhaps by FTP or something?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> installing XP from boot disks****Bastet please dont bother replying if you aret going
to help solve the issue raised, thanks so********
Hi
I am having trouble installing a fresh copy of xp with the
boot disk program. every time on either the 2nd or third
disk an error comes up. I have tried different disks etc
but still hte same. It has an error code of 7 or 512.
I have looked in the knowledge base and it says about
error code 7 but the resolution does not work.
The only way i can now install xp is by installing windows
then running an upgrade which surely cant be good.
Any ideas?
The pc is 5oomhz with 512mb RAM so should be iup to the
job but obviously not the most new of models!!

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update - 0x8007041D and 0x8024d007I just reformatted my system and installed a fresh copy of Win XP Pro - SP2.
This is the same disc I've used all the time with no troubles. The very
first thing I do is install my window's updates and then my anti-virus
software. When I go to Window's Update to begin my updates it starts to
install their tool, gets to 100% registered and gives me the following
error:
[Error number: 0x8007041D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem.
I'm like, "Wow, that's odd.. ok, let's reinstall from scratch again." So I
do another full format and reinstall to find the same issue. So I go look
at services.msc and see that the automatic update service is set to
automatica but won't start. I click on start and get the following error:
Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 0x8024d007: 0x8024d007
Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on? I need to get my pc
updated. :)

- Windows XP Support >> Still have same problemI don't know where to start. I was having problems with my 'puter, so I
finally formatted & reloaded all programs. Now I'm noticing recycle bin
empties itself, even when I only have 1 icon in there, everytime I shut down,
and boot back up i see the file sitting there, but when it's finished booting
the item gets sucked away.
The reason that I reformated was because everytime I tried to stream from a
website, (win media player 10) gave me error message "one or more codecs are
missing"
I didn't know why this was happening because I have streamed from this same
website before. It even says on the website to use wmp 10, i tried removing
wmp and reinstalling and still got same error message. After i formatted and
tried streaming that day from same website it worked. Next day tried again
and gave me same message about missing codecs. Now the reycle bin empties
itself???
Can anyone help me? I have win xp home edition.
thanks
I was told to check for a tick in the disk cleanup>empty recycle bin. No I
don't have a tick in there. I assume that would mean you have a virus.
I've also did a virus scan and nothing. Any other suggests as why this is
happening?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> What file type should I use?I have read several topics on this sbject including the very informative
articles by Graham Hughes but I'm still confused.
I'm using a Desktop with 250GB HD, 1GB Memory, DVD Burner & firewire cable.
If I capture using DV-AVI and check the box for "Create Clips when Video
finishes" the system doesn't break the file into clips as it does when I
select WMV. The unedited tape is about 15 min. to 20 min. long. After
editing it will be less than 10 minutes. What am I doing Wrong?
Another question. Should I click on the "Stop Capture" button when the
entire tape is captured? If I don't the tape appears to continue running
till the end.
Your help will be appreciated

- Windows XP Hardware >> Ghost Bootable CD on ASUS mobo...lockupsWe've been using Ghost 7.5 for a long time, it works great for what we
do...which is make simple bootable CDs that install a fresh copy of Win XP
(and other OS's) for end-users.
Today we're having our first compatibility problem, with the ASUS P5S800-VM.
The CD boots, but Ghost cannot access the virtual Z: drive where the image
resides. ASUS online tech support is of no value so far, and Norton no
longer supports 7.5.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Support >> Questionable registry entriesI was checking the registry this morning (I know enough to not touch
anything, but was looking for when my keyboard was installed - another
question later) and noticed some website visits from the past and text
messages I've sent to various email/phone addresses. Just wondering why
they're sitting in the registry and if there's any way outside of the
registry to delete those types of entries. They're not apparently dubious,
so I'm curious. As an example, I was looking for "Realdigital" and in that
same file(?) was the start of a note I sent to my daughter a while back
(perhaps sent on the same day as I installed the keyboard). If there's no
other way to delete these types of entries, I'll obviously leave them alone,
but I'm wondering why they're there. Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP Setup >> Software cannot read the hard driveA problem suddenly occurred. I use AtBackup to save files. Now when I

Do you have any suggestions?
