- Windows XP Security >> Please Hekp: Hard Drive Access DeniedTo Windows SecurityXP,
My computer wouldn't boot up(i run windowsXP) and i had a
company put in a new hard drive(:C) and keep the
remaining hard drive as a backup(:F) All my pictures,
folders, documents are still on the old hard drive and i
can't access them. When i try to get in to driveF, access
is denied. I do know the original passwords of two users,
but that hasn't helped me. the computer fixer said to
create a new user account using the same password as the
original, but this didn't help. All the folders in drive
F say they are empty and access is denied. However, when
I go to DriveF properties, there is disk space used, but
it says read only. Also, almost all the programs that
were orginally in there before,Canon photo printo, HP
printer software, etc... are listed in the computer. I'm
not tech savy at all and i was wondering if anyone can
desperately help me. I just want to retrieve hundreds of
family pictures. Is there a way to retrieve my hard drive
F?
Please help,

- Windows XP Support >> HARDWARE PROBLEM - Please help! :(Thanks for looking :)
My old motherboard crashed so I bought a new CPU, MB and memory. I had
a P4 with DDR mem - I got an Intel Dual Core 3.0 MHz, DDR2 mem. All
other periphs were the same -- but now I get the Blue Screen
occasionally telling me I have "hardware problems."
Did I need to do something different to XP Pro to let it know my
hardware is different? It seems to recognize the processor MB amd
memory...
I'm at wit's end - thanks for any and all help!!!!

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Genuine Validation ToolHi, Just wondering how this new Validation works with the pirated corporate
copies of XP Pro?
Can you purchase a key from Microsoft online for $281 and it will work on
these copies of Pro?
I did one for a new customer last week using change product key from a XP
Pro SP-2 OEM and the key was rejected?
I have a copy of this corporate version running on my virtual pc for testing
purposes and the only thing that would work is doing a repair install and
using the key provided, is there a quicker way?
what is this KeyUpdateTool.exe used for?, I tried using it also and the key
was rejected is there a special key Microsoft provides you that will work?
What annoys me the most is as a system builder, I have had no warning or
information about this from Microsoft.

- Windows XP >> Copying files across network results in corruptionHello,
I have been having an intermittent problem. One workstation has a user
that copies files to another workstation across the network. Most of
the time the files copy okay. But sometimes
they are corrupted. The method that the user is using is to copy the
local file (Ctrl-C), then open up a browser window of the destination
(i.e. start-run- \\computer\c\drivers) then paste (Ctrl-V).
We first started to notice this when the IP address was
manually/statically assigned. I am not sure if this is the true cause.
There are no IP address conflicts. The cabling seems to work fine. The
network card drivers could be the culprit here? It is most likely the
destination computer as this one is the only one known on the network
to have this problem.
Any hints or ideas here?
Thanks.

Doesn't really matter, if online defragmentation may take slightly longer,
particularly if you are still using the machine. XP defrag is very unlike
the Win9x deframenters and will not restart itself continually.
What's more important is the quantity of temporary files you're collecting
and defragmenting. Consider reducing the size of the browser caches and
clearing them - and temporary files - prior to defragmentation. Also,
empty the recycle bins.
This is really important because one of the prime locations for spyware and
viruses is the temp folders. Cleaning them regularly reduces the chances of
having the system compromised.
I've had excellent results with ccleaner - "Crap Cleaner", available free
from:
www.ccleaner.com
Donload it and install it, and run it. I personally set it to leave
specific cookies and the MRU ( most recently used) lists, and the histories
and menu orders. I set it to remove temporary files and temporary internet
files. The first time you run it it can take quite some time, particularly
if your system has a large hard disk and if Internet Explorer has decided
for itself how much of the drive to claim for itself. I've had to remove
10+ gigabytes of "temporary" files from some systems.
ccleaner adds a function to the right-click Recycle bin menu. Once you've
set it up and run it the first time, you can simply right-click on the
recycle bin and choose 'run ccleaner' and it will use the options you'd
selected.
Internet Explorer can set the "temporary internet files" sizes to several
gigabytes. In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, and under Temporary
Internet Files click the settings button. Change the size to something
reasonably low, say 25 meg max. Choose Apply, and OK back to IE and then
close IE.

> when defraging your computor should it be off line or on line
Just make sure nothing is going to try to write to that drive
while the defrag is in process, such as a screen saver, an
automatic update, E-mail, whatever. That shouldn't cause a
failure but will likely cause the defrag to start over, wasting
a lot of time.

- Windows XP Support >> File annotation utility?I'm using XP Home if it matters.
Does anyone know of a utility that will attach info to a file such as the
originating program (Ntbackup for example), type of file (backup), what's
in it (drive D), etc. File properties don't show this amount of detail.
I tried Google using search phrases such as file annotation, file info,
file data, and file notes. The only one that turned up anything was the
last - a utility called File Notes. This seems to do what I want but I'd
use it so seldom I'm not sure it's worth $49 to me. I was hoping for
something free or more like $15 - 20.
I could put a text file with this information in the folder but that
would be a lot of trouble, meaning I probably wouldn't do it often enough
to be useful.
I don't like to use very long descriptive file names because the file
manager I use truncates the view of such long names. I suppose I could
use My Computer but my file manager is much much faster and handier.
TIA

- Windows XP Update >> After installing SP2 Windows XP Pro. OS asks for activation.Hello, I've got a very strange thing on one of my computers. Windows
Automatic update have installed the SP2 (may be with somebodyâ??s help, but i
don't know). After the installation, every time I turn the computer on or
reboot it Windows asks for activation. I go through activation and it goes
fine. But i can't reactivate every time because I feel like one day it will
fail and what's then. Do you have any thoughts about this problem any
suggestions are appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Files show up twice in search resultsI've couldn't find an answer to my question else where so I'll ask it here in
hope for an answer.
When doing a search for files , results are duplicated only if the file is
located in "My Documents" folder. The type of file doesn't seem to matter
ie...mp3, txt, doc
I've inspected each duplicate to see if maybe there is a difference, but
they are the same file. (name, size, , location, even date modified)

- Windows XP Hardware >> Can't burn DVD's using Windows or NeroI swapped out a Lite-on LTR-52327S CD burner for a Toshiba DVR-110 DVD
burner. Thinking I'd save myself some hassle I just swapped the drives in the
bay, leaving Windows to assign the same drive letter used for the CD for the
new DVD. Windows recognises the device as a "DVD-RAM" but won't burn any type
of DVD format. It reads pre-existing DVD's OK. There's minimal info on the
KB, but one suggestion was it may be a Registry problem, potential solution
was to uninstall the hardware driver and force a hardware scan. I've tried
this twice with no difference. Anyone out there experiecned this and offer
some help?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> internet (virus???) issueImmediately after loading XP on my brand new computer, and
while I was obtaining updates from Microsoft, porno pop-
ups began to appear, specifically,
argvideo.com/tool.html. Answering NO to entering that

to navigate from it. My PC can not reach the Microsoft

Internet Explorer Browser. While attempting to download
anything, my Prodigy connection shows about a 3- to 10- to
1 ratio of bytes SENT to bytes RECEIVED. This happens
only on this PC. Two other PC's work just fine on the
same account, so the problem is in this PC. I have loaded
Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, but am not able to attain a

order to help find the bug. I don't want to re-load
