- Windows XP Security >> Why does the new SP2 Attachment Manager change the "Modified" date in "Blocked" downloaded files?Hi,
Before SP2, all files in a downloaded zip file kept there original
"Modified" date after extraction with the WinXP build-in zip option.
After installing SP2, I found out that the "Modified" dates of unzipped
files were changed to the current date at extraction.
After some searching, I found out that this was related to the new
Attachment Manager and the new SP2 Security option to block files from
unknown source. See also:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;883260
When I first "Unblock" the zip file, the behavior is again as it was
before SP2: the "Modified" dates are preserved.
The same thing appears to be happening with downloaded installer exe's: if
a program is installed from a "Blocked" installer, all installed files get
the current date as "Modified" date.
The further behavior of zip and installer files before and after
"Unblocking" seems to be identical as before SP2 except for this changing
date, so what is the benefit of this "Blocking" feature? Why are the dates
changed? And what exactly is being Blocked?
Thanks,

set-up a workgroup. When ping the computers from their

- Windows XP Security >> Javascript in Content AdvisorHi,
I'm triyng to use content advisor to restrict the sites allowed for some
users.
The problem that I have is that even if a site is allowed in the content
adviser allowed sites it is blocking the javascripts.
I've found that if I know the javascript function name I can add it in the
allowed sites (it works). But I don't want to add all functions one-by-one (I
don't even know their names).
What I need is a way to allow all javascript functions running in one
allowed site (I've already add this site to the trusted sites and allowed
everything in here).
Can someone please help me with this ?

- Windows XP Hardware >> reformatIt looks like I have to reformat. I'm going to go ahead and put in a new
Seagate 200gb drive. I'm not sure if my Windows disk has sp1 on it or not,
so if I put the new drive in as a slave and format it while I still have
sp2, then take it out and change the jumper to master, take out my current
drive and replace it with the new Seagate will the install disk recognize
all 200gb, or will I be stuck with the 137 gb limit anyway since I'm
"starting from scratch". Whew! Thanks for any help! (hopefully the disk
has sp1!)

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Pro Login VirusHello,

that will work?

- Windows XP Support >> Oh My Boot.ini's Gone NTFSI have a two drive RAID 0 computer with two partitions and an NTFS file
system, running Windows XP Pro. I mistakenly removed the last line of my
boot.ini file (multi(0)disk ..and so on.). I was trying to remove a partially
installed Win XP OS that resulted in my having a dual-boot setup with my
original Win XP Pro and a Win XP Pro Setup listed as options.
Booting now fails as a result of the loused up boot.ini file. It is not the
results of:
A loose hard disk drive cable
A corrupt version of Windows XP
A corrupt boot sector/master boot record
A corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file
A computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
If I boot from Win XP CD, installing the Silicon Image Raid SATA controller
drivers enroute, I can get the Microsoft Win XP Recovery Console to start. I
get a C:\ prompt and a set of commands I can use, but they can't see any
drives. So fixes, such as the one below, can't be executed:
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
DEL C:boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot
I also can't use a MS-DOS boot floppy to access the NTFS partition to edit
or replace the boot.ini file
I imagine that I can't access a NTFS partition using an ordinary bootable
diskette. I've used various NTFS utilities on floppies and the best result
was with Active Date Recovery Software which shows me a listing of the files
in my two NTFS logical drive partitions, including the boot.ini files. I can
see the files, but I can't access them to edit or replace the boot.ini file.
Anyone have an idea for where to go now (hopefully, an idea short of
removing the two drives and hooking them up to another computer to work on
them - I don't have another computer that will accept the SATA hard drives.)
Thanks.

I've check my Bios settings to make sure things were ok,
I've set the bios to do the bare minimum (fail safe)

- Windows XP >> Two Address Books ConfusingHi:
There are 'two' e-mail address books that were created years apart, in the
past.
One of e-mail address books, that is older and has more e-mail addreses
while the newer
address book has less.
However, instead of older e-mail address that has more e-mail addresses,
newer e-mail
address book sitting at the top of Outlook Express.
I want to get 'older' e-mail address book sitting at the top of Outlook
Express,
because of abudance of e-mail addresses in it.
My question is;
How to get 'older' e-mail address book sitting at the top of Outlook
Express,
NOT 'newer' e-mail address book at the top of O.E.?
Thanks for any helps.

Windows XP Update >> HP Memories Disc Creator?
System: Win XP Pro SP2
Recently went into MS Windows updates to download new updates, I found an
update for some called " HP Memories Disc Creator ". I did a search for this
software on my hard drive but did not find anything. Is this legit? The
only HP related software on this machine that I know of are just the plain
Printer drivers for an old laser jet printer.

The software installed with some HP printers includes lots of other
proprietary crap like this. If you don't recognize it - don't get it.
(And search your Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.)

- Windows XP Security >> permissions and rights for multiple usersI am the unofficial network guy at the office. Everyone is on XP Pro and we
are networked on a server running SBS2003. We have 15 users (clients) total.
I have a couple of users who have a bad habit of moving or erasing folders on
the server that we all access, then I have to find and move them back or
restore them from my external hard drive backup. Can I easily keep them from
doing this with setting read and write only permissions for these users? I
cant lock them out of these project folders completely, as they need to be
able to creat or modify documents. But I have to keep them from moving or
deleting folders by accident. Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> fuzzy monitor displayI'm using a Dell desktop and flat screen with Windows XP. My monitor
recently has developed a problem, however it doesn't seem to be a hardware
issue with the monitor. The display will become fuzzy/blurry and make it
very difficult to look at for any period of time. It does this on itself at
random occassion. I have not been able to pinpoint a way to fix this.
Sometimes it fixes itself, other times I can make it stop when I go into
Control Panel -> Dislplay -> and then change the theme (other times this does
not work). Anyone have any idea of what is happening and why?? Anyway to
stop this from occuring?? Any help is appreciated!!

- Windows XP Network >> Network 2000 server, XP pro, and XP home - workgroupHi:
This is my situation:
I've four systems as follow: (A) One PC server with
Windows 2000 server, (B) One desktop PC and a notebook,
each with XP Professional and both joined the domain, (C)
A new notebook installed with XP Home and has its own
workgroup.
Each of the four systems has its own Internet access.
My problems and questions are:
(1) Is there a way for the new workgroup to be part of
domain server and establish some kind of "trust"
relationship, so that they can use the same user account
list in the domain server for file sharing.
(2)In XP Professional and 2000 server, I can browse
domain and workgroup name, and select the computer names
to access. In XP Home, I cannot browse - is it normal and
how can I browse as I did in Pro?
(3) File Sharing: In XP Home, I clicked the shared
folders of the server, it will ask me user name and
password and can be accessed if I entered it. When I
clicked the shared folder of XP Pro (desktop), only a
message box came out saying I do not have the access
right. Not user name and password window will jump out.
How can I solve it??
(4) Any solutions for direct cable connection (using 1394)
between the Win XP pro and XP home? How do I set up for
sharing folders to avoid the need of a server?
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
John

- Windows XP >> Language difference when upgrading from 98 to XPHi guys,
In a local store there is a good offer on XP Home upgrade version. It
says on the box that it can upgrade 98 to XP. My question is can I
upgrade my english version of 98 to a danish version of XP?
Another question - does the XP upgrade correspond to the regular version
of XP or does it correspond to an OEM version?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP >> IME, Language Bar - IME Pad wont come upWith XP, I am using the language bar / MS-IME2002
to enter kana/kanji.
I am using notepad and Word (not office XP version) to
actually enter text. My problem is this... clicking
the "IME Pad" icon on the language bar does not bring up
the IME Pad. That means i cant enter Kanji by stroke,
character code, handwriting, etc.
I believe there is a bug fix for Japanese XP having
the "virtual keyboard" not working (which I beleive you
get the virtual keyboard by clicking on my IME Pad icon i
am talkinga bout).
Is there a bug in English XP? A Fix? The button is
there, so I think it's supposed to work ; ) I cannot
find anything about it on the MS website. The only entry
for the ms-ime2002 i could find at all was the Japanese
XP bug. And yes im sure i have ms-im2002 because that's
what the language bar says. Again, everything is working
but the IME Pad.
Thanks for any help!

- Windows XP >> Unable to create a Network Setup DiskThe Network Wizard gives me the following error message 'The wizard has
detected that this computer has no floppy disk drives or other removeable
media. You need such a device to create a Network setup Disk'
However I have recently installed a DVD/CD writer (Philips DVDR1648K/00) as
a slave to an existing DVD ROM which normally works fine. I've checked the
driver etc... If I view via 'My Computer' it states that a DVD-RW Drive is
installed, in properties it has a 'recording tab' although the 'hardware tab'
only lists the manufacturer as (Standard CD-ROM drives). If I cannot sort
this is there a way of creating a Disc without the Wizard ?

have several xp pro disks that all have valid and legal product keys the
problem I have is that through the course of life they have become scratched
alittle here nd there not one of them will play all the way thru without
giving me the "cyclic redundancy" line so I thought that i would take parts
of each one that the others couldnt give me and make and burn one new cd with
all the right stuff... which I have done onlyroblem is that now apparently
the "manifest file does not begin with the required tag and format
information" I am 1/2 of the way into this installation and the installation
under it is toast ....question the 1/2 way thru set up was done with one of
the cyclic redundant cd' ...how can i get rid of this partial inStall and
start over?? WITH my new super cd and will it work or has bill gates done
something to each cd ' manifest because he was worried that he wouldn't be
able to shake every last dime out of us or that some one might steal
something that mixing and matching doesnt work and is there anywhere other
than a warez site that microioft might have to download with a valid key
another working copy?? that matches?

- Windows XP Network >> Home networkI have 4 computers using HPNA (home phone network adaptor) and a router.
I set up a home network (titled HOME) on all computers.I have 2 problems.
1. Everytime a computer is rebooted I have to re-set up the home network on
that computer. Why is it losing the network setup?
2. I seem to be unable to share one of the printers on the network - a

printer. But I cannot see this printer from any of the other computers. Any
ideas why I can not see this printer on the network?

- Windows XP >> XP hard diskHi
I need some info about cloning a XP hard disk.
I have a 9 GB HDD (Fujitsu) with XP Pro on it. I don't have original
installable/Key as I got the HDD from a friend when he upgraded his
PC.
After extensively using my PC (leaving it on for long durations for
batch runs etc), it seems the HDD is close to the end of its usable
life. It makes a strange grinding noise sometimes. I am afraid my all
phd work and thesis might be lost if this HDD crashes.
I have a spare 20GB HDD and plan to transfer everything from XP-HDD to
new one. Since I have installed many software programmes, I just wish
somehow if I can just clone the old XP HDD 'AS IT IS' to new HD drive.
Reinstalling everything will be a sure impossible task and I guess it
will require a lot of time. (plus I even don't have XP pro installable
cds)
Can it be done reliably? I looked at similar posts, but most of the
suggestions seem to be trial/not-sure-to-work type. Some comments say
Ghost works for win'98, some say it doesn't for XP.
I will highly appreciate any help, advice.
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Device Not RecognizedHello,
When I attach either my Digital camera or MP3 player to my computer I
get the "USB Device not recognized" error message. I then took the mp3
player to my laptop and plugged it in and it recognized it fine. Both
of the systems are windows XP Pro. Any clue why my first computer is
having a problem and how I can fix it without having to reinstall
windows?? I do have a USB Printer that is recognized without a problem.
Thanks for the help.
