- Windows XP Support >> Cant't upgrade from XP Professional to SP 2. Pls help!I am currently running on XP Professional and i have been trying to upgrade
to SP 2 for the last few days. I went to the microsoft site for downloading,
when the system is searching for latest window version for updating, i
encountered the below error.
[Error number: 0x8DDD0018]
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.

I had followed through the instruction and do back to download but the same
error pop up again. I do realised that my Automatic Updates somehow will
revert back to disabled after i had selected Automatic, apply,ok. I had tried
many times and the same thing happen again. I am not sure whether this is the
main reason for the error.
Pls advise.

- Windows XP Support >> Problems with loading Windows UpdateI am currently running Windows XP SP2. My downloads are done automatically
and once they are done I have a yellow shield icon in my system tray saying
that downloads are ready to be installed. I try to install them but they
fail. I have attempted numerous times but still no luck.
This is the first time it has happened. I do have SBC Yahoo DSL security
suite along with Windows Antispyware program, along with spysweeper and
window washer.
I also have AV Firewall but like I said, this is a first for me.
Can anyone help me out with this problem? I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Tom

- Windows XP >> Outlook Express low memory messageI have a friend running Windows XP Home Edition, OE is
default mail client. Just recently, after using the PC
almost a year, when she tries to forward e-mail, she gets
a message stating "low memory" (she has plenty of RAM and
hard drive space) but she can compose and send new mail.
Also, when she closes OE, she no longer gets the little
box to choose disconnect, and if she clicks on the modem
icon in the taskbar and then clicks "disconnect" the phone
does not disconnect. I've run a virus check on all files,
everything is fine. No new programs have been installed.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot/fix this?

- Windows XP Security >> Please Help meRespected Sir/ Madam
I am very depressed because of hackers and their activities. I am
using Windows XP professional edition, I have installed Norton
System Works 2003 professional edition. I update it on regular
basis. I have downloaded some MS-word2000 (.DOC) Files from email.
No Virus or anyother harmful thing detected while downloading those
files (Yahoo mail and Hotmail scan with Anti Virus while downloading
files). When I run those files from my hard-disk Norton Anti Virus
scanned those files while opening too.
When I used my MSN to signed in some thoughts were in my mind as my
password is going to be out, i don't know exactly but those were
thoughts. I scanned my whole computer with AntiVirus when I checked
my computer with 'One Button CheckUp' I have found 2 errors in
windows registry those were
Invalid Active X/Com entries
"CLSID\{B58C2440-A1A3-11d1-B024-006097C9A284}" REFERS TO AN INVALID
APPLICATION IDENTIFIER, "{B58C2440-A1A3-11d1-B024-006097C9A284}
The second one was same as above too
Please Tell me and guide me is this because of some trojen or
hacking phenomina, can my passwords and secret information move out
from my computer while downloading and opening .DOC files. My Norton
Auto Protect is enabled all the time. I have come to know that some
software can make Pictures to executable files, if anyone can attach
those pictures in Word (.DOC) files can NAV detect those harmful
files
Waiting for reply
Thanks.

Microsoft provides free PowerPoint viewers. Locate them on their web site.

Another way to go is with OpenOffice suite, a replacement for M$ Office.
Yeah, for you it may be overkill with a word processor, spreadsheet,
database and so forth but it's free open-source software and is really
nice for people like me who cannot afford M$ Office. VERY nice! OH, it
will work with Powerpoint files.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Dual Xeon HT Appears as single ProcHello there,
I have Windows XP Pro SP2 running on a dual Xeon 2.0Ghz HT workstation and
once and while, task manager will display only a single CPU Usage History
graph. Most of the time it will display 4 as it should (2 procs w/ HT = 4
CPUs). While its displaying a single proc, Device Manager still displays
ACPI Multiprocessor PC and four Intel Xeon CPU 2.00Ghz. Which one is lying?
This is quite agravating because my system slows down a lot when its
displaying one proc. Any ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks and Merry Christmas!

- Windows XP Security >> LAN & Internet Conflict?I just bought an IBM ThinkCentreS50 desktop PC with
Windows XP Professional. When it is connected to our LAN
(complete w/ IP address, GW and DNS, domain name) it
cannot connect to the Internet. Everytime I browsed a
page, I notice an IP address shown at the bottomleft of
IE instead of the usual website location/name. I'm sure
connection is okay cuz I can ping websites so its only
the IE that doesn't work.
But when I connected this PC to our aDSL and set the IP
address, GW & DNS to auto DHCP, it can connect to the
Net. The strange thing is, our other PCs are setup just
the way I initially setup this Win XP Pro PC so I don't
know if XP Pro is somehow blocking the connection to the
net.
Please help!
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> USB Mouse ProblemI've had this optical USB mouse for a while, given to me before I used USB.
I got a new laptop with Firewire and 2 USB 2.0 ports. I also bought an
enclosure for my DVD recorder that uses Firewire and USB 2.0 as well a TV
tuner that uses USB 2.0. The mouse has been working fine for a while until
lately, when I plugged it in, Windows would make it's sound that the mouse
has been inserted and it refreshes the "Computer Management" dialog under
"Mice and other pointing devices" and shows "HID-compliant mouse" next to my
touchpad device. However, because it's optical and the design, you can see
the red light on the front of the mouse that lights up when it's active but
it doesn't light up, nor does the mouse respond to movements. When I
disconnect the mouse, it makes it's disconnection sound and that's that. I
can also plugin the DVD recorder enclosure, makes the sound and shows up in
"My Computer" and everything works fine. Can I conclude this mouse is on
it's way out of the door? Also, is there some program that can display the
bandwidth that individual USB devices and Firewire devices? Thanks for your
time to read my lengthy question, Nathan.
