- Windows XP >> A disk read error occurred; Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restartEver since the last time I restarted my Windows XP PC, I get the
following error:
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This has happened before, and my solution was to backup all the data,
reformat the drive, and then put all the data back again. This is
very time-consuming, and a pain in the ___! The drive appears OK when
connected as a slave, and I even ran Norton Disk Doctor on it and no
errors are found.
I'd like to find out #1, why this problem has happened and seems to re-
occur from time to time, and #2, if there is a better way of fixing it
short of keeping a spare drive on hand to do a data-transfer,
reformat, date-transfer-back, which is a major hassle and takes a long
time to do. Even after that, some applications need to be
reinstalled, because something about this procedure makes them lose
their registered status.

- Windows XP Setup >> Install XP Pro to c:\winntHi all,
I would like to do a clean install of XP Pro to the c:\winnt instead of the
default c:\windows on a formatted drive. How do I get the option to point the
install into the desired directory?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Network >> Home network problemI've got three computers networked together.
1. Win XP Home
2. Win XP Pro
3. Win98
#1 and #3 communicate great
#2 and #3 communicate great
#1 and #2 can't see each other at all.
ping times out on both #1 and #2.
All three have access to the internet.
I've turned off all firewalls.
All three run to a router and the router goes to cable
modem.
Anybody got any ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks,

- Windows XP >> Explorer Style SheetsI like to read the various newspapers like the Boston Globe each day
but since I have poor eyesight it can be difficult. I understand that
I can change the web page format but to do so I need to invent my own
style sheet to override that of the web page. Despite much searching,
I have not been able to find instructions on how to accomplish this.
Could someone direct me to a site that has instructions on how to
build my own style sheet. Examples would be nice.

- Windows XP >> email questionUsing OE and XP.
There is a particular email address I try to send to which doesn't get my
email. Nor does it bounce. Just seems to go off into some cyber void.
I thought possibly the person at the receiving end inadvertently filtered
me. I've only been filtered out by one person that I know of. The way I
knew that is because I got a bounce back telling me "so and so no longer
chooses to receive mail from you", through the person's mail server.
Do they all do it that way? If so, I can eliminate that as one reason my
mail isn't getting through to the concerned email address.
If that isn't the reason, give me some thoughts as to what else it could be
(my friend is getting email from others OK; just not from me. I'm sending
to all others OK; just not to that one).

- Windows XP >> framedyn.dll missingI am trying re-install framedyn.dll from Windows XP and
the instructions are to locate it on the Windows disk if
it is not in %systemroot%\system32\dllcache. I cannot
find it on the recovery disks. Where is it?
Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 Distiller Printer will not install in
Windows XP without the framedyn.dll file. (I bought AA
5.0.5 last May, but put it aside when it would not
operate. Now I need it, and I'm too annoyed at Adobe to
buy v.6 when v.5.0.5 doesn't work.)

- Windows XP >> Repair turned into reinstallment...all my files gone!!Hi,
My laptop originally began restarting and giving me a kernel input
error...it was all downhill from there. After about two days of this,
in the middle of a paper, it just would not start. It said there was a
file that was either missing or corrupt. So I went through my
computer's tech support and they said that they could repair it without
losing my files. Well, long story short, somehow a repair reinstallment
turned into a complete reinstallment and I lost every file on my
computer. I was able to get the programs and software back, but all of
my files are gone. I had a lot of papers and projects that are very
important to me and now they are completely gone. Is there any possible
way that I would be able to recover these lost files (such as word
documents, powerpoints, etc.)? Thanks
Sarah

Windows XP Network >> Help, please!!!!!!!!
This is an interesting problem that I am experiencing. I
have been tasked with shraring a high speed internet
connection between to "previously" separate domains. The
internet connections is currently connected to one of the
domains. However, once I make a connection to the second
domain's hub, internet connectivity become intermitent
and eventually fails.
Both domains are utlizing a separate DNS and each DNS
server is configured to forward to the ISP's DNS. Each
worksation on the domain is configured to the correct
default gateway, however, the internet connectivity is
quite buggy. After internet failure, I can successfully
ping the default gateway however I cannot reach outside
the default gateway.
I think that I've localized the issue to "cheap" linksys
router. If I go to a domain and access the router's HTML
interface I regain connectivity on that domain, but once
a user from the other domain attempts to access the
Internet, the connectivity on the once working domain is
gone. Any ideas on what's causing this issue? Am I
correct by localizing it to the router? Please help.

- Windows XP Hardware >> usb device frustrationHi
I'm sorta new to this but i have been having similar problems with my USB
devices i have tried the fore mentioned remedy to no avail. The symptoms of
my problem are similar but not the same, When ever i connect my ipod or
digital camera instead of being greeted by the little chime and a program
starting all i get is the safely remove icon. Then when i go to " My computer
to try and activate either device, (they appear as removeable disk H and I)
the message " The disk drive in H: or I: is not formatted do you want to
format. Now i tried the format once with the ipod and it was unsuccesfull but
i will not try that with my camera is there are way to many important photo's
to loose. I have tried many times unsuccesfully to reload all of the drivers
for the ipod and camera i have even tried un installing the usb drivers. I am
at wits end and i need to move the files off my camera as my partner is due
to give birth any day now and i need the space.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

- Windows XP Support >> win xp (hom) SP2 intall probI tried installing SP2 recently but unsuccesfully. The download was
successful but half way through it's automated installation it just froze for
over 30mins.
I cancelled the download and after many restarts managed to get my computer
back to it's original state.
I hope it wasn't due to just me being impatient, but it did not seem to get
past half way.
Can anyone tell me how long it should take and if this halfway point is
normally where the tab bar holds for an age.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> making vcdSo the olny format I can save my video to is WMP, and that
won't play on most DVD players. I don't have a dvd burner
but maybe I could make a VCD, but I can't find any
programs that don't cost $40.00. Is there any free
software or a way to do this with WMM?

- Windows XP Support >> Installing XP Pro - missing .sys fileI'm having trouble installing an XP Pro upgrade in a Win 2000 Pro machine.
It gets all the way through "Coping Installation Files" and looks like it's
finished, and then suddenly gives me a "File is missing error". Each time,
the file name is different, but always looks like "a7qnw9bo.sys". (this is
the actual file name from last attempt - other attempts have show a similiar
file name, which might be different, but might not). Googling the missing
file name always finds NOTHING.
If I hit "retry", it appears to do nothing and immediately gives me the
alert again.
If I hit "skip", on reboot it tells me the file is missing, the install
can't continue, and I've no choice (and given no other choice) but to reboot
back into Win 2000 again and start over - at which point I get the "file is
missing" error again when copying files.
I've tried two different CD drives, and tried copying the install files
directly to my HD to install from there. Same thing always happens
regardless of what I do. I'm afraid to try a clean install, because if it
fails, I have a non-operating system and am really in trouble.
Any further suggestions to try before I attempt to phone Microsoft support?
It appears I'm totally stuck at this point and need to find a solution as I
now own a $199 XP Pro Install ashtray for my desk, which I can't afford! I
don't smoke, anyway...

- Windows XP Support >> Computer StartupI have a computer that will power on for about 1 second and immediately power

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Backup UtilityI backed up "everything on this computer" to my external
hard drive. When I compare disk sizes, The external hard
drive is showing almost 3GB less than my C: drive and
it's not set to compress. Any ideas why it's not an exact
match?
I'd like to see the folders I've backed up (like in
Windows Explorer format) so I can compare the sizes of
individual folders (backed up versus C: drive) but
everytime I try to open the backed up data, The Utility
Wizard shows up. Is there a way to open up my backup
