- Windows XP Setup >> Please explain accounts in XPSomeone once tried to explain to me how many accounts get set up with a
fresh install, but considering it's only me who uses the PC do I need all
these accounts (admin etc) can I just not set pc up with me and no need for
password so I just go into desktop, I know some people will say it's not
safe but it's my home PC so nobody else uses it.

- Windows XP Hardware >> hp printer no longer supportedi installed a hp 1010 laser printer a couple of weeks ago
and it has worked beautifully until tonight when the
microsoft xp tells me the printer is no longer supported
and cannot use it. I have tried removing and reinstalling
several times but it is not recognised by my system - any
clues please for what is happening and why?
Getting 'serious error' messages and the last one said
Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support file not found -
getting very cheesed off.

- Windows XP >> Can't uninstall network adapterWin XP Pro SP2 including most recent security updates.
I was unable to connect to the Internet and found that Device Manager showed
a problem with my NIC: Windows is unable to load drivers. The first thing
to do is to uninstall and let Windows find the hardware and reinstall, right?
When I try to uninstall, I get "Failed to uninstall, this device may be
necessary to boot up" or something like that. I do not boot from a network,
just from the hard drive, in the usual manner.
I get this behavior in Safe Mode as well (although in Safe Mode, Device
Manager shows no problem with the NIC, probably because Windows didn't try to
load the networking drivers).
Something else clearly is going on because all of my System Restore Points
are "unavailale" although the System Volume Information directory is not
empty.
I' ve run Ad-Aware in Safe Mode, which didn't find anything. I'm about to
run Spybot S&D also. I've done a CHKDSK /R which didn't find any errors.
Any suggestions before I either open the case and physically remove the NIC
or restore from my last Ghost image (which I'd rather not do because it was a
week or so ago and I'll have to take steps to prevent losing a bunch of data
that has been modified in the interim)?

- Windows XP Setup >> Re: Windows Error on Fresh InstallIf anyone can assist me with a problem I am having I would
greatly appreciate it. Here is my issue: I receive the
BSOD which contains a Stop: Error stating
Bad_Pool_Caller
Technical information:
*** Stop: 0x000000C2
(0x0000007,0x00000CD4,0xF000E819,0x00000018)
and I am curious on how to get rid of it. I am doing a
fresh install with the following:
Windows XP SP1
MoBo- Abit KV7
HD- Maxtor 160Gb 7200RPM
AMD- 2600@333MHz
RAM- PC2700@333MHz
Video Card- GeForce 4200Ti 64mb
I havent gotten to installing the Network card or
soundcard yet as I am still debating whether to use the
onboard stuff or add the hardware that I have. I am
somewhat familiar with Win98SE but new to XP so if you do
know of a way to ammend this issue please be as detailed
as possible, within reason. Im no moron but as far as XP
goes it is a new ballfield. Thank You to anyone who is
able to assist me.

- Windows XP Update >> window explorer open file from 3rd party softwareI have XP Professional SP 2 with Radeon X800XT video card.
In the past 3 days I am having problem opening file from Photoshop 7 using
"File->Open". I get to the directory where my file is and the software
disappears without error messages. Also if I have window explorer opened but
minimized and working in either Photoshop or Creator the system come up with
window explorer failed and does a reset of sort. Reset meaning explorer
disappears and a warning saying my system is not protected by a firewall,
which normally appears after restarting or booting up the system. The
Creator and Photoshop are still up and running when explorer fails. I
removed update KB900985, but had the same problem so I reinstalled the patch.
I recently installed the "Window Genuine Advantage Notication (KB905474)" at
the same time as KB900985, could the problem be from these two patches?

- Windows XP Network >> Home Netork Problems With Norton Internet Security 2004I have two Pentium 4 Desktops set up on a Home Network. Both are running
Win XP Pro. The network is created wirelessly via a Linksys 802.11b
Broadband Router. I have Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2004 (on one
machine which is wire connected to the router) running with the DHCP IP
Address Range of the router in the Trusted Zone of the firewall. Everything
was working fine until a few days ago when the following problems occurred:
Network sharing of files and printers failed.
The error "Homenet is not accessible. You may not have permission to use
this network resource" appeared when attempting to view computers in the
workgroup.
The Network Setup Wizard failed to restore the network and would not even
show the main computer in Network Places.
Microsoft .Net Service failed using MSN Messenger
All of this seemed to resolve after I disabled the firewall, and ran the
Network Setup Wizard. The problems came back if I reinstated the firewall.
I tried checking the solution Turn On NetBIOS over TCP/IP (MS article
318030), but my situation did not meet the conditions that Microsoft detail,
and this lost the Internet Connection
I can only put this down to some update that Symantec have sent to NIS 2004.
Has anybody else had this or similar experiences?
Much is made of having a firewall in place, but it really does seem to cause
problems. Is a software firewall really necessary, or does the hardware
router provide a sufficient firewall? NIS does seem to detect a lot of
potential intrusions, but if it makes the network fail it is not much use!
Any comments - especially from the MVP's would be appreciated.

- Windows XP >> transferring data from old hard driveI have a new dell pc running XP. I have an older pc, running windows 95, with a 3 GB hard drive. I want to transfer all the data from it onto my new computers hard drive. How can I do it? Can I run a parallel port from one pc to another and then copy the files? Should I remove the old HD, put it into my new pc and transfer files across? I am at a loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Networking logon between xp machines???I have 1 primary comp with printer on Win XP pro.
I have 1 comp with Win 2000
I have 1 laptop (new) with WinXP home.
They share an internet connection through a router.
The two desktops are cabled while the laptop is on
wireless. The intenet works perfect for all.
My problem is with file sharing. The desktops work fine.
Each can see the other and those files/folders set up as
shares. I set that up some time ago and works perfectly.
The laptop can see the both desktops. The laptop can
access shared files/folders on the Win2000. It can also
see the WinXP Pro machine but when I click on the
computer icon in My Network Places I get the following
error:
Logon Failure:The user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this computer.
This problem is driving me crazy....how can I possibly
get past this ???

- Windows XP >> Microsoft Works/MS Word on HP PavilionHi-
Just bought HP Pavilion Notebook, and downloaded MS Works with MS Word,
Excel, Access, etc. However, as soon as I start typing in Word, the
screen starts "jumping" up and down as if the PC had a virus. I spoke
to HP support, they said since Excel works fine, it must be the Word
problem, suggested to uninstall the MS Works. I unisntalled and
installed it again a few times, however, the problem keeps occurring.
I am not sure if I should bring the Notebook back at this point, or
not.
Any suggestions? Thanks...

- Windows XP Update >> WSUS problemHello,
I have recently introduced WSUS onto our school's network. The installation
went fine and all computers (approx 140) were visible. The WSUS server
synchronised just fine and I have changed the approval category of all
updates to "install". However, on the WSUS server conolse I can see that
all of the computers have stats such as (for example) 12 Updates installed,
58 Needed.
This is obviously from manual updates that have been ran prviously so WSUS
does not seem to be working in terms of dispersing updates to clients. I
have checked the WSUS directory and the permissions are correct.
Group policy is setup (under Computer Admin Templates) for the clients to
point to the right server for WSUS and everything else is setup as per the
installation documents from microsoft.
Can anyone help me with this? Is there something I need to do on each
client (bar group policy) to invoke WSUS?
thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Support >> New slipstream or delete updates?Hello Group!
I am having a few problems with my machine, and I hopefully will be
able to do a rebuild,
rather than a full repair/reinstall of XP. (fingers xx'ed)
Last year I created a slipstream of SP2. What I wanted to know was:
should I create a new slipstreamed SP2 with all of the new updates that
I have on my machine from the past year, or delete all of the updates,
or just use the original slipstreamed XP. OR if anyone has any other
suggestions, I am a sponge ready to learn!
I have always kept up with the windows updates.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Security >> How do I set this up?I have 3 computers all on the same network and subnet. Computer1 has
sensitive information that must be secured. However, I need to be able to
access Computer1 from Computer2 and Computer3. I've shared the root of
Computer1 and now I need to know what local and share permissions I need to
set so that 2 and 3 can access 1. Also, do I need to do anything with the
policies on any of the computers? What about user accounts, do I need to
create user accounts on Computer1 with the same name as accounts on 2 and 3?
It's been a long time since I've done this stuff. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
