- Windows XP >> Hard drive is running out of spaceI have client that is running Windows XP Pro SP2. The Operating system is on
a 20 GB Partition. The client is running out of hard drive space. I have
freed up 3 GB of space and within one day the hard drive is full. The client
isnt downloading any files. The client is using Outlook 2007. I have turned
of the offline cache. The size of the clients email box is 1.5 GB.
Is there any way I can audit where the hard drive is being filled up. I need
to get the computer back to the client as quickly as possible.

all of them to have access to the internet. The internet
icon is on each desktop but does not work when double
clicked. It only works on the 'administrator' desktop.

- Windows XP >> Hijacked homepage in EI 6I'm one to try something new and at time it get me into trouble. I
downloaded the Beta version of IE 7 and installed it. I didn't like some of
the bugs and followed the instructions on removing it. The removal seemed to
function correctly. After reverting to Version 6 I noticed that every time I
started IE 6 up by clicking on either the icon in the Task Bar or in the
Start button dropdowns, instead of opening up on the home page that I
specified , it opens up to the Microsoft Update Page. When I change the Home
Page in Internet Options in the Control Panel to what I want and re-open IE
6, it reverts back to Microsoft Update Page. I have not got the faintest
notion as to what is going on. Has anyone run into something like this? Any
help would be welcome.

- Windows XP Network >> Question on Home NetworkingI am trying to set up a "server" to the Internet using XP. Computer A has
(a) a NIC card to a Cable Modem, (b) a wireless NIC card and (c) a modem.
Computer A can get to the Internet.
Computer B has a wireless NIC Card. Computer B can get to the Internet via
A (Computer A's NIC Card (a) is Shared).
Computer C dials in and connects via Computer A's modem (c) and shows up on
A under "Incoming Connections". Computer C cannot access the Internet.
How can I get C to get through A to the Internet?

- Windows XP Network >> Sharing files when not on the domainWe have laptop users that need to share files when not on the domain. They
are in client's offices working on the same project. When in the office, they
can share files between laptops. I am sure it has to do with domain
authentication but when they are not in the office, they do not have access
to the domain. Some of the laptops can see each other and their respective
shares but are denied access.
Is there a way to make this work?

hotfixes and we get a greyed out check mark on the read-only section of
the properties of any file.. Even network ones that are really not
read-only.. any one come up with this.. I have yet to find a windows

- Windows XP Setup >> can't see network folderhi!
I have a wired problem. I am connected over a basic network ( i think it is
called peer-to-peer).
The manner in which the computers are connected is as follows:
1) The main computer is an XP Professional.
2) The other computers are win 98, win 98se, and one XP home (thats me).
The network is to help us share files and printers and the internet
connection. The funny prat is that I am able to acess the internet, use a
lan messenger program and communicate with other users. But i am not able to
access the shared folder on the Main computer.
When I try and ping to this address i get a request time out.
Can someone enlighten me to the problem.

I did get some advice as detailed below. Unfortunately
this seems to have come to a bit of a standstill and I
wonder if anyone can revive it a little for me.
The previous postings were:
Thank you for your prompt response to my enquiry to the
Microsoft News group. It was indeed helpful. I located
the Power Users as you advised and added the new user to
that group.
However I then started to get into difficulty.
When I looked at "User Accounts" through the Control
Panel the new user was shown as having "Unknown account
type" and when I went further to try and use an Access
application I was told I only had "Read Only" authority -
the same that I get when accessing from a user with
a "Limited Account" account type.
I have tried all the different variations I can think of
to get round this without success. I wonder if I could
trespass on your goodwill by asking if you had any
suggestions. I will be very grateful for any help. With

not change the password. Can I do that in Windows XP?

Thanks for the link to the lastest drivers, installed
them and .....nada....
It now sees that there is a PDA on the system, but it
tells me the device has malfunctioned...same with the USB
KB or my Canon camera....yikes..
All of the above currently work on this machine under
either W98 or Linux....just not XP.

I"m not sure if this is a bug in intellimouse software, IE 6.0 or Remote Desktop. I've lived with it long enough to feel sure it's a bug. Should I post this in Mouse, IE 6.0 or here

About four months ago I recieved some automatic updates and the next time I
went in to work on some video all of my transition effects were gone. I still
have the time effects, credits and titles and all the other stuff is working
fine but I can't put in any of the fades and such. I actually use WMM for
short documentary pieces and it works fairly well for most things so I really
need to keep my transistion effects for this work. I'm on a very limited
budget so getting another editor is not an option so I could really use some
help getting this fixed.

my web server is working fine but my .aspx files are missing. all
my .aspx.cs files are present.

want to install the version of XP Pro that is on the old computer, on the
new one when it shows up. The old computer will be decommissioned at that
point and either sent ot the scrap heap or I may put Linux on it just to
play. What is the procedure for this? I think I remember something about
having to call MS if the system is already activated and I need to
reactivate it due to hardware changes. Will the number be displayed at
activation?
Has anyone done this? Any issue with MS on this?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Explorer FreezingThis problem first started a few days ago, and has been happening more and
more frequently, seemingly at random. Explorer will freeze while I'm opening
or navigating through an Explorer window, or while trying to open a picture
in preview. Once the Explorer window freezes, all I can do is turn the
computer off, when I attempt to shut down nothing happens. All other
currrently running programs are unaffected. After the first freeze I ran
virus and spyware scans and defragged the HD, but nothing seems to work. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

2gb RAM

- Windows XP Basic >> Broadband Connection ProblemsCan anyone make any suggestions?
I have a BT Voyager 2091 Router that I know works OK. When I first
installed it it set-up fine and I was able to connect to Broadband using
either the Ethernet cable or wirelessly.
Everything was great until I tried to install a Belkin wireless Print Server
to enable me to use 2 printers located in another room. This was fraught
with problems and several calls to the Belkin helpdesk yielded nothing. I
then made the mistake of asking the BT Broadband Helpdesk for advice and,
after a 2 hour 'phonecall they had not only failed to make any progress with
the Print Server but also managed to disable any form of connectivity
between my laptop and Broadband (either using the Voyager router or even
another Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem that I have). This seems to have been
the result of deleting some registry folders named 'Winsock' and
'Winsock2' - after that I received a Symantec message telling me that TC/IP
was not installed.
Anyway, after a couple of further lengthy calls, the TC/IP elements are now
working again and I can connect to Broadband using my Alcatel modem. The
Voyager router is, however, not connecting - the concensus from BT is that
my laptop is defaulting to the wrong IP Address (254.?.?.?, whereas I know
that the Router is set to 192.168.1.1). They suggest that this is a fault
with the Wireless Adaptor in my laptop (Intel(R) PRO / Wireless 2200BG) and
suggest that I need to 'rollback' (?) my computer by pressing F10 during
Start Up - I undestand that this restores it to 'as delivered' condition and
thereby erases all additional programmes, data, etc that I have added. This
doesn't appeal!
I appreciate that this may be a problem too involved to resolve via this
forum but can anyone point me in the right direction?

extra 25% of disk space (a 100k file would have a 25k index) and since
file indexing search is still slow, I would like to reclaim the disk
space lost to file indexing. I know how to turn off file indexing, but
how do I reclaim disk space once I turn it off? Is it automatic, or do
I have to throw away a file?
