- Windows XP Update >> Vista Update Installs Over and OverI posted this a few days ago but didn't receive any replies, so thought I'd
try again.
Vista keeps reinstalling the same update over and over. My update list
shows that it has been installed six times, but it still pops up again. This
is so annoying that I've turned automatic updates off. I'll be this is a
registry issue but don't know exactly what. Any ideas? Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Missing Entire Media FileA couple days ago, I uninstalled Kazaa, but returned my media files to
the same location C:/Program Files/Kazaa/My Shared Folder because
thatâ??s where my media files pull from. I put in Kazaa in name only
to preserve the file path. However, I turned on my computer (after
running Microsoft Anti-spyware and quarantining the "real" Kazaa), I
found kazaa(2) in place of my "dummy" Kazaa and my entire file was
gone.
Please help me, I need the files in there for my final project!

- Windows XP Setup >> Malke and Sharon F. More Help with Timeout issue Needed!Ok I came home at lunch and did what you both told me to do. I went to the
control panel, system, device manager and then to network adapter, properties
and then power management and unchecked the box. Then I went back to work.
When I came home about 5 hours later I still had the same problem where my
internet wouldn't come up. I had to log off and log on again. What is going
on? Did I need to reboot my system for this change to have taken effect?
It's really driving me nuts!!! Please help again if you wouldn't mind.
Thanks! Karen

the "Red X" over it (and the message that not all netowrk

the drive (or a program trys to access it) it really is
connected? Anyone every seen this, if so, how do I
correct?

- Windows XP Network >> cached credentials and shared resources accessHi There !
My english is not good so maybe the answer to my question exists on
NGs but i cannot find it... :-(
I have a notebook with Win XP Pro registered on domain XYZ. When user
goes away he can logon and work in domain with cached credentials.
Then he connect to our company via VPN (windows integrated PPTP
client) and he can (i.e.) ping any host on LAN.
But he cannot access to his folder or public folders on PDC. XP ask
for a logon and, entering user and pwd of the cached logon, it answers
(it's a translation from my language, not the original message,
brackets 4 my notes): "The username entered is the same used for
connection (ceched logon on the domain). Username already used. Unable
to find a PDC for username verification."
It's a very fast reply, without querying network, so I think it's
WinXP that doesn't try to find the PDC because he know the user made a
network disconnected logon with cached credentials. It cannot immagine
that now the PDC for username is available via VPN.
Other notes:
- I can see shared resources providing a different domain username
than the one has made the cached logon
- If I do a cached logon and then i connect the LAN cable I can see
shared resources
- Network, Dialup network and VPN protocol and bindings properties are
ok
Who can help me ?

Windows XP Hardware >> CD Drive Error
If I insert a CD into the drive and it has AutoPlay it
opens and plays. But if I need to open the CD that is in
the drive manually to see what files it contains, I get
the error message that the drive in not accessible. When I
looked in the Properties on the Shortcut I see that the
Target location is F:\ and the Target is F:\, but when I
click on OK I get the message that F:\ is not a valid
string. When I click on Find Target I get a message that
the closest thing is a string that leads to a game I once
played. My E drive(DVD)and A drive work normally (the F
drive used to), and I'd like to fix this, but I don't even
know where to start. Can anyone help??? I hope my
explanation of this problem isn't too confusing.

Windows XP Hardware >> CD Drive Error
You should be able to access the drive via My Computer.
When did the problem start? Did you install new software around that
time?
I had a similar problem introduced after installing and running
software tools downloaded from Sysinternals and Commander Pro UPS
software.
My Destop and Send To shortcuts to CDRW and DVD did the same thing as
yours, even if I made new shortcuts, the same problem occurred. The
only way to access the CDRW was via My Computer.
The problem disappeared when I did a system restore to before the
installation of the above software. I don't know which bit of
software caused the problem, or whether something else caused it.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive letter (in the lefthand
panel) and drag to the righthand panel. Let go of the mouse button, and
CREATE SHORTCUT HERE. Then move the shortcut to whatever directory
(folder) you wish.

- Windows XP >> Outlook Express & norton Jan 19th update problemIt is not my server and it is not my email being misconfigured. It
happened to my friend's and my PC's, xps, and we are each on different

send. I wrote Norton 3 times about it, but get technicians from out of
this dear country who just say to try all their suggestions on Norton's
pages, which I had already done before I wrote them. And I tried their
ONE suggestion in their email back to me.
I do System Restore and then email works fine again. Why can't Norton
see there is a problem and fix it for us? My friend and I have nearly
a year to go on Norton, and now we can't do live update. I will not
disconfigure the Norton firewall and use the XP firewall because, as
you all say, it isn't the best one. Both my friend and I do not use
the block spam email feature.
I have seen many others complaining about this Norton problem, but no
answers yet. Please help as we would like to use our email. Our
internet email works just fine.

- Windows XP >> System Freeze After Critical Updates: XP HomeI posted this in the Windowsupdate group, but no useful replies yet:
I am having a problem with my daughter's computer:
AMD Duron 750 MHz
Gigabyte TNT2 M64 32 mb VideoCard
128 mb RAM
I did a clean install of XP Home in January of this year. The system has
run essentially flawlessly since then, with rare to non-existent crashes or
freezes.
She recently developed a problem where her MSN Profile wouldn't keep the
changes she applied. Probably a cookies issue. While I was at her
computer, I went ahead and applied all Critical Updates that had accumulated
over the last few months. They downloaded and installed uneventfully, with
normal boot-up afterwards.
From that point on, this system would totally freeze multiple times every
day. This would occur during normal usage, browsing the web, etc. Really
nothing exotic. The system would be totally responsive, with Ctrl+Alt+Del
not producing any effect. Have to power down to reboot. I was at the
system for about a half-hour, not doing anything even remotely demanding,
and encountered first-hand multiple lockups.
I found an updated video driver through Windows Update, and installed this
without any problem, hoping to resolve this problem, but no joy.
Fortunately, I had used DriveImage 2002 earlier this year, capturing the OS
partition from when the XP Install was completed, and all her usual
programs, NAV, Zone Alarm, etc. installed, and everything was running fine.
I restored this image uneventfully, and the system again ran beautifully.
I again let XP install all Critical Updates, and the previous freeze-ups
immediately recurred. I do not know which one(s) are causing this problem.
I re-ran DriveImage, and got her up and running again. But unless I can
identify where the problem is, I won't be able to apply Critical Updates and
keep her system up to date.
It seems clear to me that one or more of the Critical Updates is triggering
this problem. Any ideas or suggestions on which one(s) or whether or not
this problem has been identified, with a fix available, would be greatly
appreciated.
