- Windows XP Support >> Windows Firewall/ICS Service will not startEver since I unistalled Norton Personal Firewall for some reason my Windows
Firewall would not start. Then i read the error message it gave me: We're
sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning
on the firwall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the
Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended) and click OK.
But the problem is when i try to do this it gives me a new message that says:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service
is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Conection
Sharing (ICS) service? When i click yes it says: Windows cannot start the
Windows Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service. So then i even
went into Adminstrative Tools and then looked at the Services. Whenever i
found the Windows Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service I tried
to start it and it said in yet another message: Could not start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error
10047: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.
Any ideas on how to fix it? It's annoying having to see the dang Message
Bubble everytime I start my computer and the icon staying.

I have a problem with my HP laptop running on XP
professional. I am unable to establish any sort of a dial
up connection.
I mean, it detects my modems correctly ( when i use either
my Nokia USB modem, or my Agere 56K) and there is a
connection established in my taskbar. But there is no data
transfer, and data sending freezes after the initial
connection
Can somebody please help me, as I am unable to use my
mlaptop while travelling.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows Update for FriendsMay I download and save to a CD Critical Windows Updates
for friends that do not have a broadband connection to
the internet or do they have to be connected themselves
in order to update their system? If I can, any
suggestions on how to do this. The update webpage I get
while online does not offer an option to save to a file,
it only downloads then installs. Any help will be
appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Fonts missing in Windows XP desktop propertiesHi,
I'm running Windows XP Pro and I'm having a problem with fonts.
I have dozens of fonts installed, and they show up in c:\windows\fonts
folder, and in applications like MS Office, Notepad, Wordpad, charmap, etc.
However, if I right-click on the desktop, select Properties, then Appearance
tab, then click on the Advance button, only 5 fonts show up in the font list
for various GUI elements like menus and windows title bars.
How do I make the other fonts available for GUI elements ?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Hardware >> mainboard queryHi,
My PC has died on me, and I only bought it a few months ago. I was getting
long single beeps and tried to test the RAM , but I think I've compounded
the problem now. I bent a capacitor with too much force and also the battery
doesn't fit back into place securely anymore. Now the fan and drives fire up
but no video. (FIC P4M-800T motherboard)
My question, if I want a good quality motherboard to replace my old and
possibly rebuild this thing from its partsh . What should I be looking for?
I have a P4 chip with HT and I plan to use my ATI graphics card . I will
probably need to replace my memory too with
Or is there a possibility that my motherboard can still be fixed and how?

- Windows XP Security >> Access deniedI have locked a folder using a "local sgaring and
security" tab, "make this folder private" option. But now
that i have reinstalled windows on the same computer i am
unable to access that folder. Altho i know the password
used to protect the folder i am no where asked for it but
onlz get a "access denied" message. Is there any way to
access those files?

- Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?I heard somewhere that Win XP has a max of 17 or 19 open windows. Is this
true? Can it be changed through settings?
I keep running out of browser windows. Sometimes, if I have two or three
apps running (like Notes, Outlook and Dreamweaver), I can only open 4 or 5
brower windows in IE. After that, there is no right click menu any more, or
nothing happens when you click "open in a new window".
The PC is a 3.5 GHz P4 with 1GB of ram, so that should not be a limitation.
I am running Windows XP Professional SP2 in a corporate network with machine
admin rights.
Can anyone throw any light on this limitation?

Windows XP >> toshiba laptop keyboard
Hello, I posted yesterday and someone replied and I'd like to thank them for the help first of all. They said I could probably get better advice if I had my computer specs, so I have them now. I have a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 with a pentium 4 processor. This is my problem: When my computer is connected to the internet my enter key will work fine for an average of 10-15 minutes, but will then stop responding when the key is pressed (this does not only affect my internet browser and related online features, but other programs on my computer such as microsoft word as well). This problem does not seem to happen if the computer is not connected to the internet. I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling my keyboard driver, setting my computer's settings back to a day before the problem first began, and lastly I wiped the hard drive and started over from the recovery disk...the problem still exists though and I am clueless. Any insight into this problem would, again, be much appreciated...I hope the specs will be of some help this time. Thank You.

Neil, I don't have an answer for you, but this sounds like a hardware
problem. Have you tried contacting Toshiba Support?

- Windows XP Support >> iTunesThere is a file in C:\documents and settings\all users\start
menu\programs\startup named gjzp.exe. This file prevents iTunes and
Quicktime from loading. It can not be seen or accessed from explorer. From
a command prompt I can delete it. When I start my computer from MSCONFIG
with selective startup and this not loaded, everything works fine. After a
normal restart the file reappears. Does anyone know what program creates it?

- Windows XP >> Windows XP Pro won't hibernate from Welcome ScreenI have a relatively new generic XP (SP1) system. It is configured with 3
accounts and fast user switching. Each account has power user or admin
privlege. I've configured each to have a screen saver that hibernates after
2 hours.
If I leave the computer with an account actively logged in (not at the
welcome screen), the machine hibernates after two hours, with no problems -
just as it should.
If I leave the computer at the welcome screen (regardless of the number of
accounts logged in), it will never hibernate. I would like it to hibernate
after 2 hours of inactivity regardless of who is logged in or whether you're
at the welcome screen or not.
I guess the question is, what controls the power/hibernate policy when at
the welcome screen? I can't find any answers after scouring google groups
and the MS website. Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Update >> IE6 SP1 Will not update using WinUpdateHelp me pleaseâ?¦
I have a Win2K Server SP4 and cannot get it to install IE6 SP1. I have
tried installing via the windows update but the fails with the message â??Setup
was unable to download the required components. Please make sure you are
connected to the internet, or try to run Setup again later.â??
I then downloaded a full admin install of IE6 SP1, thinking it may be better
to install it this way, but when it get a little way in it tells me that
â??Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and try running Setup again.
I have full admin rights on the Server.
I am putting the server into Install Mode (terminal).
Anti Virus is Disabled (Sophos).
No programs are running.
I have successfully done this on my other 5 Servers
Please help :-)

- Windows XP Network >> How a costomized DHCP paket can be sent form 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255?Hello:
I need to simulate the process of DHCP client, by following steps:
1. Excute ipconfig /release
2. Send a costomized DISCOVER packet(which is totally equal to the
packet from ipconfig command ) from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
3. Language : C# , call System.Net.Socket.UdpClient to send the
packet.
Error: Host Unreachable. But the packet form ipconfig can be sent to the
network.
If I set a magic IP address 192.168.0.23 before step2, my packet can be sent
and the OFFER form DHCP Server can be received.
Did I miss something or made some mistakes?
Thank you very much!

Also, when it installed to partition, it somehow deleted my .boe file from Outlook express Backup file. gone. Is it possible that this will somehow miraculously return upon uninstall?

- Windows XP Network >> forwarding a range of ports [ICS]I have two computers networked to share an dsl connection using a crossover
cable. I want to be able to forward UDP ports 1024-65535 to the client
computer, but XP's builtin port forwarding apparently only allows you to
forward individual ports rather than a range of ports. Is there a third party
program, or maybe a registry hack that will do this? Or do I need to find a
hardware solution?

the following " Sorry, Content advisor will not allow you
