- Windows XP Setup >> Updating to SP1 troubleshootingI had to reinstall my OS Windows XP. Now I cannot get the
update for SP1 to install. I've already disabled my anti-
virus software. The online download and installation
didn't work after numerous tries and after hours of
downloading via phone line. I downloaded the networking
SP1 that doesn't require an internet connection. When
installing this SP1 I get this error: "setup cannot copy
file win32k.sys. Ensure location is correct or insert
windows xp service pack 1 source files." I cannot find
any source files for this. The only thing I have from the
download is the .exe file for the installation.

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Home won't boot...I did a new install of XP Home (upgrade edition) and it
apparently completed with no problems and no errors
generated. The machine fails to boot, however, hanging
up on the XP splash screen. I tried Safe Mode, get the
menu, but booting stops after listing a few dozen file
names.
The install was repeated several times, all with same
result. My final attempt included repartitioning C: and
using the (slow) NTFS formatting option.
I'm out of ideas...

I had the same problem, and was due to a proxy server issue. At a command
prompt, just type:
proxycfg -u
After that, the updates started working with no problem!

The following table lists the command line parameters available for
use with the ProxyCfg.exe tool:
Parameter Description
========= ===========
none When no parameters are specified, the current WinHTTP
proxy settings are displayed.
? Help information is displayed.
d Specifies that WinHTTP applications access the network
directly, without a proxy.
p Specifies the proxy server. You can also specify an
optional list of servers that are accessed without a
proxy.
u Specifies that WinHTTP applications use the current
user's proxy settings for Internet Explorer. This
parameter does not work if Internet Explorer is
automatically detecting proxy settings, or if it is
using an automatic configuration URL to set the proxy
information.
i Specifies that WinHTTP applications use the current
user's proxy settings for Internet Explorer. This
only works when ProxyCfg.exe was not previously used.
If ProxyCfg.exe is installed, specify that the "u"
command line parameter use the manual settings. This
parameter does not work if Internet Explorer
automatically detects proxy settings, or if it uses
an automatic configuration URL to set the proxy
information.

Hello Michael Gora,
I don't even know if you are still on this site, it's totally off
topic, I hope the moderator will forgive me, but I'm looking for my
long lost cousin, who's name is also Michael Gora, lives in Germany, he
is in his late 20s and his mother's name is Sabina. If you are by ANY
CHANCE that M.G., please send me an email at EMail@HideDomain.com.
If you are the "wrong" Michael then sorry for the "disturbance".
greetings,
zsuzsi

- Windows XP Support >> Getting rid of an old address bookI am using XP-Pro and OE6
If I am sending an email, I can go to Tools-select recipients and find the
right address. The address book is set up to sort in order of last name.
But if I simply go to the To: line of the email and start typing, the
address that pops up is
an old address that is sorted on first names. This old listing is out of

How can I get rid of the old list?

- Windows XP Setup >> Can I restrict access to CD write capability?I'm wondering if there is a way for me to control which users have the
capability to write to a CD. I want them to be able to read, but not write.
I need control over the actual CD Drive, not any specific CD. Is there a way
to do this in XP Pro, and if so, how?
I've used a piece of software called DeviceLock in the past, but it has one
glaring flaw: While I can, in theory, allow read but not write via
DeviceLock, if an unauthorized user opens up the EasyCD Creator application,
it just bypasses the DeviceLock controls and lets them create a CD.
Thanks,

- Windows XP >> XP not allowing share by nameI have 2 XP Pro machines on a home network.
The hub is a Netgear MR814 Wireless router.
In the past I had been able to share files using each machines name but
periodically this ability would go away.
I would correct the situation by using system restore.
However due to some recent software problems I lost all my restore points
and can not go back to using the machine names to address in file sharing.
This was an anyoying process anyway to use SR.
Does anyone know why I would not be able to address the PC's by name and
what I could do to permanently fix the problem?
Here is the status on the system to help diagnose the problem
Network adabpters on both machines have
1 Client for Microsoft Networks
2 File and Print Sharing
3. TCP/IP Protocol
Network adapters on both PCs are set to obtain IP automatically and I have
tried both "Enabling Netbios" and "Default Netbios" settings
Each machine has a unique name and is on the same workgroup
Each machine has a reserved IP address on the router
Each machine has internet access

- Windows XP Setup >> XP reinstallationI had a RAM module fail, which apparently corrupted my OS
(XP Home).
Working with Dell, I was able to reinstall XP over the
corrupted OS, but none of my programs work. The

then could retieve my exisiting data on the hard drive.
This is somewhat convoluted, but here goes.....installed
XP Home with a different user name. The original user
data is still "visible" on the hard drive under the "old"
user. Do I really need to reinstall all the programs?
I am having a great deal of difficulty with my Norton
