- Windows XP Network >> Networking IssueI am trying to network three PCs (1 Desktop, and two laptops) wirelessly. The
desktop is hardwired to a router (BT make) and the two laptops have a
combination of wireless network card and a usb network card.
I have assigned them all to the same workgroup (HOME) and when I run the
search I can see all of the PCs connected. The issue I'm having is that when
I double click on one of the PCs to access the shared folders I get an error
message along the lines of access not granted and that I should contact the
administrator.
What are the ways our this? All PCs are running XP have the SP2 pack
installed.

- Windows XP Setup >> is it possible to partition a partition?I just installed XP Pro on my computer. I made a mistake
during the partition process and I made one giant
partition (about 30 gig). Now that XP is fully installed
I wanted to make this one big partition into two. Disk
Management won't seem to let me do this. Is there any
thing I can change? Let me know if you have any
suggestions. Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Any problems associated with installing applications on a different partition?Lot's of my programs keep freezing up and "program not responding".
About 20% of them for some reason. Mostly they come back after several
seconds but some take up to 30 seconds or more and the odd one I have
to end program.
In the absence of any rational explanation I'm wondering if it could
be anything to do with having Windows XP (SP2) installed on C: but
installing all my programs to partition E:?

- Windows XP >> Some websites want a dialup connectionI've got a DSL connection & Win xp Pro. Sometimes I visit certain web sites
and the computer suddenly pops up my dialup connection dialog box, even
though the DSL connection is working fine. What's the reason for this?
Anyone know a way of looking behind the scenes to understand exactly what
source is calling that dialog box? Or, is there a way to keep it from
happening for ANY reason, regardless how valid?
This machine is absolutely, positively virus & spyware-free, incidentally.

- Windows XP Setup >> Installing SP2 questionAs we all know, Windows and inparticular the registry get
overly bloated. Especially when installing and unistalling
software. So, once a year I clean out my system by
formatting and reinstalling windows. My question is this;
can I install XP Pro (original), bypass the 4 hours of
downloading and updating to SP1 and all other critical
updates, and go straight to SP2? If I have to install SP1
first, where can I download SP1 and all the other critical
updates seperately so I have them on file when I go on to
the next machine in six months?

avoiding all year slipped through.
Something like "Windows Genuine Advantage something-or-other"

Am I worrying over nothing?
Can anybody elucidate?

- Windows XP Support >> How do you delete an Old OS in a Dual OS machine?I have two operating systems in my computer. W 98 and W XP Home. This is
because I upgraded my system from W 98 to W XP.
I have my system Hard drive set up, where I have two partitions (C & D). W
98 is located in Drive C which is formatted as FAT32 and W XP home is in D
formatted as NTFS. Now, when I boot up my system, it goes thru an initial
Black screen asking me which OS do I want to boot with, and I always pick XP.
This has been a bit annoying but I have learned to ignore it. However, it
does slow down the initial start up process.
My question is can I delete W98 from my machine since I don't need it anymore?
What is the best way to do this?
Can I just go to the C Drive and delete the Windows folder?
I am concerned that if I delete W98, there may be some shared folders that
might be needed for W XP to operate properly. I am concerned that my computer
will not boot up or work properly after the deletion of W 98.
All comments and advises are welcome.
Best regards,
Frank

- Windows XP Setup >> Corrupt WinXPHome startup files; Ways to RecoverProblem:
When starting up WinXPHome Toshiba laptop, it keeps going
around in circles between WinXP Welcome screen and
rebooting. I believe that some start-up files have been
corrupted.
History:
During a SVCPak1 installation from CDROM while on battery
power, the battery power ran out (my wife couldn't find
her AC power cord) and the computer shut down during the
installation. I believe she probably tried to restart it
a few times, but there wasn't enough battery power left.
Upon finding AC power cord, she observed symptoms listed
above when restarting.
Same Welcome Win -> Reboot cycle occured when I had her
try to start up in SafeMode or Last Known Config.
She called CompUSA Tech Support which came with computer
purchase and they basically told her that she either
needed a full copy of WinXP to recover or she would need
to use her Tohsiba Recovery Disk which would result in
her loosing all of her data. One problem is that since
the computer was purchased with WinXPHome on it, it
didn't come with the actual WinXPHome installation disks.
Questions:
1. I also have a Toshiba laptop running WinXPProf
(different laptop model than the hers). Can I create
some kind of recovery disk that would help her boot up
her system and repair the corrupted files?
If the WinXPHome recovery disk thing will work, I also
have access to someone running WinXPHome on their desktop.
If this will work, how do I create a WinXP recovery disk
and is it computer manufacturer independant?
2. My copy of WinXPProf is an upgrade copy. Would this
upgrade installation disk be able to help her out or do I
need an actual WinXPHome installation disk to make things
work?
Is there any cross licensing issues that I would need to
be concerned with if I did this [Both copies are licensed
but to different computers]
3. Any other suggestions? Was the CompUSA guy correct
when he told her that the Toshiba Recovery disk would
wipe out all of her data if she were to run it, as a last
resort?
Thank you and sorry for the length of the post!

Windows XP >> Audio problems with Windows Media Player
I suddenly lost the ability to use any of my software that has audio.
The lasst time I had audio was when I used Ulead software to burn a
DVD slide show with an audio sound track.
I have a P4, 1.3GHZ, Win XP, 1GHz of RAM and 2 hard drives, a 30 Gb
and a 100 Gb.
When I go to Real player I get the following. "Cannot open the audio
device, another application may be using it"
When I open Windows Media Player I get. "WMP cannot be used because
the required audio hardware cannot be found"
I went to the control panel and opened "Sounds & Audio Devices"
Under the "Volume Tab" I get "No audio device"
Under the Hardware Tab I get. "All working properly" when I check
each device in the list.
I'm Stumped!!!!!!!

- Windows XP >> Can't uninstall network adapterWin XP Pro SP2 including most recent security updates.
I was unable to connect to the Internet and found that Device Manager showed
a problem with my NIC: Windows is unable to load drivers. The first thing
to do is to uninstall and let Windows find the hardware and reinstall, right?
When I try to uninstall, I get "Failed to uninstall, this device may be
necessary to boot up" or something like that. I do not boot from a network,
just from the hard drive, in the usual manner.
I get this behavior in Safe Mode as well (although in Safe Mode, Device
Manager shows no problem with the NIC, probably because Windows didn't try to
load the networking drivers).
Something else clearly is going on because all of my System Restore Points
are "unavailale" although the System Volume Information directory is not
empty.
I' ve run Ad-Aware in Safe Mode, which didn't find anything. I'm about to
run Spybot S&D also. I've done a CHKDSK /R which didn't find any errors.
Any suggestions before I either open the case and physically remove the NIC
or restore from my last Ghost image (which I'd rather not do because it was a
week or so ago and I'll have to take steps to prevent losing a bunch of data
that has been modified in the interim)?

- Windows XP Setup >> Re: Windows Error on Fresh InstallIf anyone can assist me with a problem I am having I would
greatly appreciate it. Here is my issue: I receive the
BSOD which contains a Stop: Error stating
Bad_Pool_Caller
Technical information:
*** Stop: 0x000000C2
(0x0000007,0x00000CD4,0xF000E819,0x00000018)
and I am curious on how to get rid of it. I am doing a
fresh install with the following:
Windows XP SP1
MoBo- Abit KV7
HD- Maxtor 160Gb 7200RPM
AMD- 2600@333MHz
RAM- PC2700@333MHz
Video Card- GeForce 4200Ti 64mb
I havent gotten to installing the Network card or
soundcard yet as I am still debating whether to use the
onboard stuff or add the hardware that I have. I am
somewhat familiar with Win98SE but new to XP so if you do
know of a way to ammend this issue please be as detailed
as possible, within reason. Im no moron but as far as XP
goes it is a new ballfield. Thank You to anyone who is
able to assist me.

- Windows XP >> Retail version of XP Pro vs. regular versionI bought a Gateway notebook with Windows XP Pro installed as well as
Microsoft Office. It has:
CPU: Intel Celeron M 360 1.4 GHz
Memory: 512MB (1 x 512MB)DDR PC2700 SO-DIMM
Video: Intel Extreme Graphics 2 Integrated NB
Audio: AC '97
I installed an older (Pre XP) version of a program called Tenant Pro 5. I
had been running it on a Windows 98SE desktop prior to this. When I tried to
run it I got the windows message about having to shut down Tenant Pro before
it even started. I removed it and reinstalled it several times but got the
same result. I tried loading and running it on my computer with Windows XP
Pro and it ran fine.
I contacted Gateway but they pushed me off onto Tentant Pro to ask for an
OEM patch. Tentant Pro no longer supports version 5 since they now have
version 7 out. They did say that version 5 was available before XP and that
some computers will run it and others will not. They therefore don't have an
OEM patch.
Any suggestions? I'd really like to run it on the notebook.
TIA,
AndyF

- Windows XP Network >> Home Netork Problems With Norton Internet Security 2004I have two Pentium 4 Desktops set up on a Home Network. Both are running
Win XP Pro. The network is created wirelessly via a Linksys 802.11b
Broadband Router. I have Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2004 (on one
machine which is wire connected to the router) running with the DHCP IP
Address Range of the router in the Trusted Zone of the firewall. Everything
was working fine until a few days ago when the following problems occurred:
Network sharing of files and printers failed.
The error "Homenet is not accessible. You may not have permission to use
this network resource" appeared when attempting to view computers in the
workgroup.
The Network Setup Wizard failed to restore the network and would not even
show the main computer in Network Places.
Microsoft .Net Service failed using MSN Messenger
All of this seemed to resolve after I disabled the firewall, and ran the
Network Setup Wizard. The problems came back if I reinstated the firewall.
I tried checking the solution Turn On NetBIOS over TCP/IP (MS article
318030), but my situation did not meet the conditions that Microsoft detail,
and this lost the Internet Connection
I can only put this down to some update that Symantec have sent to NIS 2004.
Has anybody else had this or similar experiences?
Much is made of having a firewall in place, but it really does seem to cause
problems. Is a software firewall really necessary, or does the hardware
router provide a sufficient firewall? NIS does seem to detect a lot of
potential intrusions, but if it makes the network fail it is not much use!
Any comments - especially from the MVP's would be appreciated.
