- Windows XP >> XP Home BackupI installed the backup from the XP CD. I set up a password protected
directory for running scheduled jobs. I went through the wizard to schedule
a backup to a local drive. I logged off the schedule account. The
scheduled job did not run when scheduled - or at least I cannot see the
backup file.
Is there something special that must be done to get it to run?
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Game is deleted when I run Norton's System's Works 2002I need some help. My husband and I have our separate
user accounts on my Win XP machine. (I am the
administrator, he the power user). I continually do
maintenance on a weekly basis using a variety of tools,
mostly Norton's System Works 2002 quit button check up.
Yet I have noticed that everytime I use the quick checkup
option or any other option, my husband's video
game "Balduir's Gate" is then uninstalled!! It seems to
do this on it's own with no command from me. So now,
whenever I run NOrton's, he has to reinstall his game!
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Hardware >> XP doesn't recognize flash drivesI'm running XP on a generic P4 box. I've just gone to
Microsoft and downloaded
all the new patches.
I have a Sony Micro Vault that works fine. Other flash
drives, from Belkin
and Lexar, aren't recognized at all. The OS recognizes
that something has
been plugged in, but the device manager just
shows "unknown device" afterwards.
I've tried the Belkin drive on an old Win 98 machine with
a driver downloaded
from Belkin and it works fine. So I know both the drive
and the USB ports work,
but not together.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Update >> 926436 downloaded-installed twiceNow what? I only checked this one update to install-926436. Progress showed
it downloaded (1 of 1 update) and installed. However it showed this
downloading and installing twice. Then said to restart. I have not
restarted yet. Will this cause some problem? It is listed in Add/Remove
only once. Should I remove it and not restart?
(XPSP2)
Thanks.

like PC 2700 and PC 3200. How do I find out which kind my machine has

but not what kind of memory it is. Does some utility show that
information? Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Error in Control Panel/Game Controller/PropertiesI have Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1a.
When I click on Properties of a Game Controller I receive an error message
that
"Run DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close". From
details I learned that the app is Rundll32.exe. I have tried to repair this
but nothing seems to work including reinstalling Windows.
Can anyone please help?

- Windows XP >> Error when attempting to delete or move filesWhen I try to delete or move some files/folders I get the
following error message:"Error deleting file or
folder....cannot delete [filename]:it is being used by
another person or program. Close any programs that might
be using the file and try again."
I opened the task manager to see if there were any
applications running that could possibly be using the
files/folders in question, but there are none in use.
Could there be a background application in WinXP that
would be using the files that would keep me from
moving/deleting files? Just a note...most of the files
are 600mb or larger. I did not know if there was a
problem with large files in this situation or not.
Please advise. TIA.

- Windows XP Setup >> settings not being saved in administrator accountsettings not being saved in administrator account in XP pro.
I did a search at win update and only found 15 references that really didn't
hit the question.
I have 2 accounts administrator type, but don't need 2. I'm the only one using
this machine.
This machine seems to do exactly what it wants to do.
For the past few weeks I've been trying to make the admin account the main
account and just use that one and delete my 2nd one and just set up one of
those others that has to exist as the backup admin account.
I can't get the admin account to save the most basic settings. ie: every boot
you need to change the mouse settings. It can't add wallpaper from another
drive, it can't use the slide show screen saver cause the pix are on another
drive.
folder settings disappear immediately after you close and reopen a folder.
And the list goes on from there.
It has considered the admin account the default user and boot to it when it has
a problem. Trouble is I have to reset stuff then log into the backup account
cause the admin is worthless..
How do I make the admin account work like the 2nd account ?

- Windows XP >> XP bug (?) - file share registry not flushed when removing a hard driveAt my desktop PC I have a separate physical drive for personal files,
documents etc.
On this drive I have set up a few file shares, such as:
D:\Documents And Settings\.....\<my username> shared as Documents
D:\Multimedia shared as Multimedia
Suddenly this drive (D:\) crashed, WinXP could no longer read it whatsoever.
WinXP was still intact of course, as it runs on a different physical drive .
Then I did the following:
1. Removed the drive letter assignment (D:\) in Computer Management\Disk
Management
2. Removed the disk physically from the PC
3. Bought and installed a new disk
4. Formatted the new drive and assigned drive letter D: to this drive
5. Rebuilt the directory structure and restored data as best I could :-)
To my surprise I could observe that once I created the directories that were
corresponding to the Documents- and Multimedia-shares on the crashed disk,
they were automatically shared, using the old share settings!!!
I would say the "bug" is that file share information on a drive persists
even when the drive's drive letter assignments is removed.
In my scenario, at first this behaviour was quite comfortable - the process
of restoring my system as it was before the disk crash was cut short by a
few step.
However, things working "by coincidence" does not make me 100% confident in
my system's healthyness. Especially as I suspect the hard drive crash to be
WinXP software related in the first place.
Any comments on WinXP inner workings for managing file share information
relevant to this scenario is appreciated, although I primarily wanted to
share this "oddity" with you.
For the time being, I continue to run the system that works "by
coincidence". If anyone with knowledge on WinXP's inner workings on this
consider that risky, I urge you to tell me... :-)

Windows XP >> Start menu exploring problem
When trying to explore start menu folders I have always been able
to scroll the cursor over the start menu folder and click explore or
explore all users. This has recently stopped functioning. I now have
to manually go to the windows explorer instead of using the short cut
method on the start menu.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows - Delayed Write FailedI am using WindowsXP Professional on a P4 1.8G system.
I recently used EasyCleaner by ToniArts (freeware/no support) to clean up
TEMP files and think that may have contributed to my problem of not being
able to back-up to my 80Gig external harddrive.
Here are the error messages that I am receiving:
1) DELAYED WRITE FAILED - Windows unable to save all the data for the file
"drive:file name.bkf" The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a
faiure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save
this file eslewhere.
2) DRIVE ERROR - The device reported an error on a request to write data to
media. Error reported: Unknown Error. There may be a hardware or media
problem. Please check the system event log for relevent failures.
I have pretty much eliminated the hardware because I can still backup to the
80G drive over the network. I just cannot backup my C: drive which contains
about 28G of data.
My inclination is that I have deleted necessary files that need to be
replaced, but I have no idea how to replace them or even what needs replaced.
I would like to re-install windows, but I cannot save my drive contents due
to the error received, so I need some advice on what course of action to take.
Thanks . . .

- Windows XP Update >> WinXP sp2 cannot updateHi,
I decided to update Windows XP Prof sp2 today and I get about 8 updates
listed. I click install and an hour latter NOTHING. So I tried it via the
custom method and deicded to do the oldest one first. - Same problem.
Finally I noticed one update addressed a windows update issue concerning
firewalls. Tried that one alone then even turned off my firewall (NIS v2005)
and NAV 2005. Again nothing.
Anyone have any ideas. I also tried it via automatic updates. Then used the
"notifiy me method".
This time got message with no error number but gave the list of updates and
said they were not installed! Redid several times with the same result.
I have a Pentium 4, 512MB Ram, 2.2Ghz Speed and a 60Gig hd that is only 40%
fill. WinXP Pr Sp2.
Help!

- Windows XP Setup >> Infrared problemsHi, i'm trying to create an iinfrared network from a desktop PC to a laptop.
The laptop has infrared, which I had to install by hitting F2 when it started
up, but the desktop did not have infrared, so i bought an adaptor that
connects to the serial port. How do I know if the desktop model can run
infrared? The box of the adaptor didn't say it required anything special to
run... I used xp hardware wizard to setup the infrared devices, and the
wizard to set up a network, but when I try to connect to my desktop from
laptop, etc, it says Error 769: The specified destination is not reachable
