- Windows XP Support >> Windows Genuine Advantage Kit - Report Help neededAfter buying a used computer, I've found that the copy of Windows XP Pro in
it was not a legal copy. I've gone to the site to purchase the Windows
Genuine Advantage Kit and filled out the Online Counterfeit Report. The
problem is - it doesn't allow me to put in the approximate date of purchase
in, which I don't even know. I'm at a total lost on who to contact and where
to proceed.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks,

- Windows XP Setup >> ME removalMy PC originally came with Windows ME installed - drive C.
I have since split the hard disk and installed XP - drive D.
I no longer have a use for ME and I want to remove it and put XP on drive C
and, eventually, remove drive D leaving XP installed on drive C.
I have tried to install XP but I don't get the option of removing ME. The
installation program keeps selecting drive D which I don't want to change -
at least initially.
How do I replace ME with XP?

- Windows XP >> Cannot delete item from desktopThis is a re-posting. Thanks to those who have already
offerred suggestions.
I had to access some very old DOS based Lotus 1-2-3
files - Release 2.4. I installed my old software and
wanted a shortcut to it on the desktop. Instead of
creating a shortcut, I actually moved the 123.exe file
from its folder to the desktop. When I try to delete
it, I get a message saying: "Cannot delete 123. It is
being used by another person or program. Close any
programs that might be using the file and try again."
Nothing or no one is using the file. The computer is
part of a network at home. But even when this computer is
the only one on, I still can't delete it.
I have tried the following - none of which work:
- booting in safe mode and trying to delete it
- using the add/remove programs option in Control Panel
(it's a DOS based program and doesn't install
itself into Windows and doesn't appear as a program in
Add/Remove programs).
- bringing up the Task Manager to see if there is a
version of it running. There isn't, so there is no task
to end.
- checking that I have Administrator's rights.
Anyone with any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> Domain profiles.I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup to post this, but this is
something I always wished I knew how to do. Scenario:
Small network of 2000/XP workstations. Domain controller is added to
network, computers are added to domain. Domain user accounts are added as
local users/administrators on workstations using "control userpasswords2"
OK, now what I *want* to do, is use an existing profile on the workstation
for when the user logs in to the domain. I've tried copying the profile to
where the computer loads the domain profile from (usually C:\Documents and
Settings\user.DOMAIN) and checking permissions, etc.. no joy...
Is there any easy way to do this? Do any proposed solutions also allow one
to copy a domain profile to a local user profile?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Network >> Peer to Peer network problem pingingHi,
i am in desperate need of help or i will go insane!
I have an XP Home host and a 98se client.
the client can ping 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.10.2 (it's own IP address)
However....the host can ping 127.0.0.1 but when i try to ping 192.168.10.1 i
get the now dreaded "reqyuest timed out".
At the same time my task bar is showing that my LAN is connected and running
at a speed of 100 Mbps.
in desperation i've bought another network card and put it in a spare slot
to se if this will fix the problem, but this just tells me that i have a
cable unplugged and refuses to work........

Windows XP >> programs wont run!!
When I upgraded to Windows XP from Win98, it appears that I lost some of my software programs and files in my document. Any ideas as to how can I restore or relocate these programs and files. I did not create a backup for the programs or files.

Windows XP >> programs wont run!!
Hi Samuel,
If they are truly lost, and not just displaced under an old profile, then
they will need to be reinstalled from the original installation media.

- Windows XP Update >> How do I cancel Windows Update SP2I clicked "yes" when my automatic Windows Updates icon came up showing me
that Windows SP2 was available for download. I have a dial-up connection so
this download is going to take at least 20 "online" hours just to download.
After 3 weeks it is only at 40% and I have since ordered and received the CD
for installing it. My question is How can I CANCEL the download and stop it
from continueing everytime I logon? I have tried clicking on the icon (both
left & right) and cannot get any pop-up menu to appear. Will the download
discontinue if I go ahead and install Windows SP2 update via the CD
installation software? I would appreciate anyones help and expertise in this
matter so I can cancel this download. I is causeing my computer to run slow
when I am online.
Thank You in Advance,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows only giving half processor speed...Okay... this is random... but, sometimes, Windows XP only runs at half my processor speed... I have an AMD XP 2100+ processor off of a SOYO Dragon Plus KT333 Motherboard..it should run at around 1.73 mHZ and sometimes, it does... other times it only runs at 866... Now, I thought this might be a problem with the clocking speeds, so I went into BIOS and set them manually.. and still, I get this problem... I've tried everything I know how to do.. and I cant figure out why sometimes it works right, and sometimes it doesnt....

- Windows XP Setup >> Howto close "Find New Hardware" dialog while installing device driver. For Windows base OS, when we plug-in a new device, the OS will come
out a dialog that "Find New Hardware". I know it is normal for popup
this dialog. Because I write a setup.exe file that will install device
driver. This dialog will not disappear automatically while running
setup.exe. I don't know how to close this dialog because it has
language-division. I can't use FindWindow() to get the correct one. Is
there any API or solution can make it?

- Windows XP Network >> 'Protected Object' query10-Jul-06
'Protected Object' query.
Accidentally went into "My Network Places \ Network Tasks \
View Icon for Networked UPnP devices" - via Explorer.
Popping up at top of list in right pane was
"ADSL Modem/Router IGD". Properties gave the device address as
"http://192.xxx.x.xxx/" (have x'd out the last 3 sets - in
case it's a private thing).
This revelation was fortuitous as I'd been looking for info on
accessing the Router in case a problem ever crops up here.
When dble-clicked object, got "Connect to 192.xxx.x.xxx" User
Name / Password box - for which I don't know the details as
this small home net was set up by some IT man over a year ago.
When clicked "cancel" or "OK" (among others), got message:
Protected Object. This object on the ROM PAGER SERVER is
Protected".
Question: How to access the Router without the rqrd info?
My knowledge on this is marginal at best but having read thru
and downloaded many of the excellent 'networking' solutions at
this forum over many months, in effort to pick up on the issues,
it appears that one of these days I may need to tackle
items like 'DHCP', among others - and I'd like to be ready
for it.
Appreciate any info whatever on subject.

- Windows XP >> Starting NTBackup causes a "generic host process..." errorI have XT Pro. NTBackup used to work a month ago, however, when I try to start it currently it displays a dialog "looking for backup devices" and then shortly thereafter it generates a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services...." system error dialog. When you close this dialog everything except the screen background disappears and then it locks. You have to boot out of this
I thought that I could reinstall ntbackup.exe from the CD but I don't know how
Any help would be certainly appreciated

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Home upgrade hangs with less than 1 min to goI have tried 6 times now to install XP Home on my
computer. (Compaq Presario model 168217-003 - everything
USB no legacy mouse or keyboard connects). Everything
goes great until it gets down to 1 minute to
go...uninstalling setup files. At this point the
computer simply hangs. On reboot it starts the entire
install over and then hangs at the same point. What can
I do? Can I go in with a WIN98 boot disk and delete
files manually? (I tried to delete the C;/windows/temp
file and it didn't change anything). I am not sure what
to do. This was to be an upgrade. I cannot even revert
to WINME (at least I don't know how to). I do not want
to wipe the drive and lose all my info. I would
appreciate any help!! Thanks - Jimmy
