- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Help center directions for safe mode can't be followedLong story short, am loaded up with spyware and want to start in safe mode
and delete some of them that way if possible.
But XP help center instructions on Safe Mode do not match what's on my
machine. Help center sez click Start and then "click Shut Down" but no "Shut
Down" option as such appears after I click on Start. There is that "Turn Off
Computer" button at the bottom that gives option to Standby, Shut Down or
Restart but they all work directly with no intermediate drop-down of any
kind. What am I missing?
I know there's a key you can hold down during startup that will get you into
safe mode but I forget what it is. I tried F8 but that spawned "keyboard
failure" and I had to force shutdown and restart.

- Windows XP Update >> WUD after SP2General question--is WUD v5 going to function in the same fashion as v4? The
same options appear to be available for selection by the end user. I always
preferred to be notified of updates, do my weekly maintenance and then
install the updates when I felt the PC was ready, not "force-fed."

- Windows XP Security >> Immediate Log Offa machine of mine running WinXP Home. The problem it is
having is whenever it trys to logon the main user, after
about 3 seconds, it logs out again. Any ideas on what
would cause this?

- Windows XP Update >> Windows XP Pro SP2 Update Limits RamI have 4 gig dual channel OCZ Ram on a DFI Moherboard. Beofre I installed SP2
I could right click on my computer and it showed all 4 gig. After SP@ it only
shows 3 gig. The post test reads the 4 gig correctly so it must have
something to do with this SP2 upgrade.
Can anyone give me a trick or treat on how to fix this issue?
I would appreciate it.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> chkdsk utilityI run a chkdsk C:/f/r for a corrupt file called (permdata.box). I believe
that this fixes it, but sometimes I still get this message. I also received
a message C:\system volume information corrupt run chkdsk. What causes this
to happen? Is it computer games that my kids play? How can I find out the
source of this problem without having to run a chkdsk twice a month?--

- Windows XP Support >> Copying the registryI am trying to change the operating system on my grandson's computer from XP
Pro to XP Home without having to reload all of his games & such. A friend
told me that I could copy the registry, change the OS, and then paste the
copied registry in the new OS. This way all of the existing installations
would be restored.
Is this true? If so what is the file name of the Registry?
My goal is to uninstall my licensed XP Pro that I need to put into another
machine. I have obtained a licensed XP Home disc for my grandson's machine.

- Windows XP >> Does WGA update often?I am curious as to why, when I go to the Microsoft update site and check for
updates manually, it almost always tells me I need WGA. Is that thing
updated frequently? I have been doing the manual checks several times a
year, for a variety of reasons, mostly my suspicious mind.
And, because of that suspicious mind, I have also observed that, every
single one of those has an expired security certificate (you know, the one
for the ActiveX control that tells us to check, but no one ever does).
Can anyone tell me why--if indeed there is a new version of WGA several
times a year--why would there not be an up-to-date security certificate on
the ActiveX control to install it?
Thanks so much

- Windows XP Security >> XP forgot my passwordI use a site once or twice a month, so when Windows asked if I wanted the
password saved for me, I said yes. A couple of months ago, (perhaps at SP2
time?) the password seems to have been forgotten. By Windows as well as me.
There are other sites where I use this option that still work fine. Is
there a way to reset the password for a single site so Windows will ask
again if it should save it for me?

Windows XP Support >> Removable Storage Service API for C/C++ - ???
Hi everyone, I'd like to find some documentation about the C/C++
programming interface to the Removable Storage Service (RSS).
Unfortunately, neither MSDN nor google nor even RSDN :-) has nothing of
this matter. Exactly what I need is to check if all the elements of the
RSS work queue are in completed state and then, if so, clear the queue.
It's easy to do manually using MMC but I have no idea how to do the
same programmatically.
Thanks a lot.
P.S. Sorry for my terrible English :-)

- Windows XP Setup >> user does not have access privilegesI recently "organized" my second hard drive by creating folders and
moving files to the appropriate folders. Now I can not access the
files (.docs, .pdf, .xls). I receive the following error message: user
does not have access privileges. My machine is a stand-alone single
user Dell XPS w/ XP SP2 and no network connections. I can't change the
properties on the files either, they appear to be read-only.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Defrag QuestionWhen I run Defrag, there is a huge gap between most of the stuff which is on
the left (the beginning) and a little amount which is slightly to the right
of the middle (see screenshot). Because this gap is always there, even after
I perform the defragmentation, I am assuming that the files that make up the
little bit on the right rarely get modified (although I can't be sure
because I don't know which files they are). I would like to have them in the
same area as all the others, because with such a huge gap my hard drive
could probably gain something from not needing to make that big jump for
such a small amount of data. Is there some way I can "trick" defrag into
moving these files, or some way I can find out which files they are without
any extra software? Thanks.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Analog video captureConnected a VCR via composit connectors to ATI AIW7500 using WinXP Movie Maker 2. I can see the video and hear audio but more than half the time I click Start Capture I get a file which has no video and only audio. Sometimes if I start a new capture collection it works and other times it freezes at 3kB total and not video. Have managed to capture an entire VHS tape once. Now I'm tweaking the brightness levels and cant get the software to grab video
Any thoughts
Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Blue Screen After Logging inWe use roaming profiles.
When an old server is offline, users get a blue screen (no desktop) after
logging in.
All the old shares were created on the newer server.
This morning, the old server is dead, users can't log in.
administrator can log in.
I can log the users in here at this location.
I disabled roaming profiles on one user, that didn't help.
I removed and readded the PC from and to the domain, that didn't help.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP >> Laptop Logoff Painfully Slow when a Kerberos Realm user is logged onA laptop logoff is painfully slow when a Kerberos Realm user is logged on.
When we setup Windows on a brand new Dell D420 and use an MIT Kerberos Realm
to logon, it takes about 10 minutes to log off later (sits on the "logging
off" window). When we do not have the laptop setup for Kerberos, then it
logs on and off very quickly.
a. We have removed all group policies.
b. We have tried the laptop in different OU's with different policies
enabled.
c. We have tried using our "standard" image for a D640 (with different
drivers installed).
d. We have tried a clean install of Windows from the Dell CD.
If we logon as a local domain or local machine user, it works fine. If we
setup Kerberos and logon as a MIT Kerberos Realm user, it logs on fine but
when it's time to log off it takes forever.
We have 150+ machines on our network, all using an MIT Kerberos Realm to
authenticate and only this one new Dell D420 has this problem, and only when
logging onto the domain using Kerberos Relam credentials.
Has anyone seen this before?

- Windows XP Network >> Direct Cable ConnectionI have a desktop and a laptop, both using XP Home. I
cannot make a direct connection between them, to share
files and printers, work. I continually get the message
that the modem in the laptop (the guest) is not working.
I use a serial cable between COM1 ports. When I look at
the modem properties, the system returns 'Unknown' for
the modem address, and I can't find a way to bridge the
internal modem from COM3. Can someone please advise what
I have missed out, even though I carefully followed all
the instructions in the wizards and on-line help?

- Windows XP >> FormatDoes anyone know how to format the C drive on XP? And if
so, I am assuming that my restore disk will re-install all
the programming on it?
I have got problems that occured with this before I even
bought the computer (new) where java was damaged and more
problems of the same so that whoever tried to repair it
gave up. Jan. 28th was a popular day for it and I did'nt
buy this computer until May... I'd like to format and
clean it up before I re-install, have tried running the
restore disk 4 consecutive times with no luck. XP is
loaded on the restore disk so I do not have the original
XP installation disk from Microsoft. Any ideas?
Win 98 was easy to format, XP is giving me headaches.

- Windows XP >> Administrative Tools Applet in Control PanelHey there,
Does anyone know the registry value and key location to change to
hide the "Administrative Tools" folder that is in the Control Panel?
I've looked around here, and the only answers I find are for the
Administrative Tools that appear in the Start Menu, which isn't exactly
what I'm looking for.
Thanks!
