- Windows XP Hardware >> Driver Irql-not-less-or-equali keep getting this message that goes traight to a blue
screen, dumps the physical memory, and says that its
because the Irql-not-less-or-equal. Now, i have updated
every single driver i have, as well as fiddled in bios.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

- Windows XP >> Bad shortcut iconsThe shortcut icons for my MSOffice suite (word, excel,
ppoint, access) as well as adobe acrobat display as
generic icons instead of the specific ones (the blue "W"
for word, the green "X" for excel, etc.) Also, the
documents themselves (like .doc or .xls files) have
generic icons too. The "change icon" button is greyed out
in properties.
I've tried deleting the IconCache.db file and restarting,
and changing the screen resolution and color quality in
display settings. Neither has changed anything.
Please advise.

- Windows XP Security >> XP HOME local security settings issueI am running XP Home and under administrative tools, there
is no "local security settings", i would rather not have
the traditional "power users" and "administrator" rights
for each of the names on the computer, i would like to
have more flexibility in controlling who can do what and
so forth, how would i go about doing this if i cannot find
the local security settings or the computer configuration
dialogue boxes anywhere on my system, thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> Internal ErrorI have a program that ran OK on Win98 and the documentation (several years
old) says it will work on WinNT. When I try to run it in WinXP it won't run
at all. I get a beep and a little window comes up that says Internal Error
(a red X in a circle) and main2_w, 150.
Anyone have any clue about this?

- Windows XP Hardware >> device driver for mustek scannerI have windows xp home edition. After disconnecting my
scanner for some reason weeks ago, i now find i cannot
reinstall it. I am using a usb port and each time i plug
in I get the dreaded blue screen. I then realised i have
to install the driver first then plug in. All i get is
the " Paramount is incorrect". I have managed to dissable
the driver but when inserting cd to install again i still
get the paramount is incorrect. I know i must sound an
idiot but please bear with me as i am 48 and until
January this year had never turned a pc on. I am self
taught and very pleased with myself i have even managed
to install a cd rewriter all on my own. Which has been
working great for 6 months now.
Can some kind wizzard out there tell me where I

- Windows XP >> can't import foreign volumei have connected a 160 GB HD via USB to my Computer.
the HD is formated as a dynamic volume. when i try to=20
import the foreign volume i get the following error-
message:

"Interner Fehler - Eine Datentr=E4gergruppe mit dem=20
angegebenen Namen ist bereits vorhanden. (C100007A)."
translated:
"internal errot - a volume with the specified name is=20
already existent."
i connected the HD several times befor whitout any=20
problems.=20
if yo know what's to do please tell me.

- Windows XP Support >> Weird beeping from inside notebookHi there,
I get weird beeping noises from my IBM T23 (PIIIM, 1.2GHz) - but only
when certain applications are loaded. I noticed the beeps from under
the left palmrest when one or more of the following apps are loaded,
even when in the background and completely idle:
- Trillian or Skype
- Flash-enabled websites
- Windows Media Player
No beeping with IE, Office, Movie Maker, Mozilla
I'm running XP Pro SP2. Someone suggested that this might be
SP2-related. I will further investigate this with a clean install
without SP2.
When Speedstep is set to "Adaptive", the beeping is related to any
activity on the laptop, i.e. moving windows, clicking a link in my
browser etc. loudens the beeping.
The beeping is more obvious when running on AC, as the CPU runs faster.
On the slow and very slow setting, it is more silent.
What could that be? It doesn't seem to come from the speakers,
attaching headphones or muting them doesnt help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Systenm ShutdownI'm currently working on a Gateway Laptop that will not
shutdown upon command. It goes through the normal shutdown
proccess and once it gets to a certain point, a blue
screen pops up very briefly and states that a problem has
been detected and the system is shutting down but never
does, It loop back and just restarts to the login screen.
Any advice on how to will be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Error message when closing Internet explorerWhenever I close down internet Explorer i get this error
message
"The instruction at 0x01732008 referenced at memory at
0x01732008. memory could not be read.
On the top of the error message it is saying that it is
an iexplorer.exe application error.
I am running windows XP and I tried reinstalling
iexplorer but i can get that to complete either.
Any help would be appriciated.

I have researched back through earlier posts, and none I saw revealed the
question I need.
I have my Desktop pc, and for Xmas, gave a laptop pc with Vista installed.
Unfortuntlly, the "group sale" (pc, printer, router) was great to have, it
came loaded with a minimum of software.
She is needing a word processing program.
From my pc, I have the Works Suite (2004), along with many others.
Can software for XP be used for Vista ??
By the way, I need a new keyboard ... this one misspells terribly ...

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Repair of perfmon.msc performance monitorApparently a number of people have had problems with perfmon not
displaying system performance data. It seems to be due to some .dat
files being missing or corrupted.
After much searching and experimenting, I have found a fix.
Run a search for perf*.dat in the C:\I386 folder
Copy all perf*.dat files to the C:\Windows\system32 folder
Start Pefmon.msc. It will begin to display data immediately without a
reboot.

- Windows XP Setup >> unread email messages on logon screenI've recently upgraded to Windows XP. Now, it seems to
indicate that I have unread email messages. I currently
have 2 email accounts (AOL and cable). There are also
other users defined on the computer.
Where does Windows XP look for that information and how
can it be pointed to the correct email source?

- Windows XP >> Welcome ScreenFollowing a tip in one of the posts here, I ran "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2" so
that the Welcome Screen in my Windows XP Pro would not flash after the
boot-up. (The Windows XP Pro was the OS a technician placed in my computer
in place of my former ME which became unbootable. I don't have the CD, and
apparently he uses the XP Pro to put on different puters.) Anyway, I found
that the "use password for log on" was checked but that no password was
used. The aforesaid tip said to uncheck the need for the password. So I
added a password but unchecked the password box. Now when I boot up I get
two additional messages that I did not get before. One said that I was
unable to log on and to be sure that I used the proper case in my password
(I never was prompted to use a password.) I checked OK, the box disappeared
and the underlying box asked me to state who was logging on, the
administrator or me. I checked me, and then I got my usual welcome screen.
This is no big deal, but I'd like to at least get back to where I was
before.

I am unable to remove Outlook Express and Windows Messenger.
I don't have the CheckBox for the above applications
in Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->Add/Remove Windows Components

On a clean reinstall, WInXP decided I should have 3 users; All Users, David
(me), and Owner. I am the sole user of this comp. Any way I can at least
get rid of "Owner" (Understand I'm stuck with All Users)

USB Mass Storage Devices are allocated a drive letter OK
But, when try to access the device I get:
'This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on your computer......'
Investigation shows this may be due to a GPO setting.
If due to a GPO where is it and how can it be changed?
If something else what could it be?

I have the same problem. My HP6200 and Canon G2 have
worked fine under XP until recently when I installed a new
TV Tuner Card (Ledtek) which is in a PCI slot not related
at all (I think) to this USB problem. I have checked with
the XP help pages (there was a problem with USB that was
supposed to have been fixed in Service Pack 1 back in
September of last year). I followed all the steps
recommended about deleting the devices and latest XP
compatible software for the HP and Canon. But what I
really don't understand is why in the Scanner Camera
window of the Control panel, the "add hardware" line on
the left side doesn't respond to any clicks. What is the
show stopper here? SteviG

had 'crashes' from which Ws recovered. I was given the following references
in the System Log:
Event- 1003; Category- [102]; Source- System Error // Event- 7009; Source-

Source- DCOM // Event- 11; Source- cdrom // Event- 7; Source- cdrom.
I would appreciate an interpretation of these references or directions to a

- Windows XP Setup >> How do I install WIN XP Home on pc with WIN XP not genuineI found out that my windows XP Pro is not genuine. The place where I purchase
my computer is gone, but in order to have a legitimate copy, I purchased WIN
XP Home. Now I am stuck on what to do. I have two hard drives, 40GB (my main
one) and and old one of only 12GB. Can I move some things to the
older/smaller harddrive? Also do I uninstall WIN XP Pro? I can do some
things on the computer, but other things I am lost. If I uninstall my current
version is it 'formatting the disk'. If I do this, will it remove everything
from the old hard drive? If not, then when I install the new winxp home will
the old hard drive still use the old non genuine edition? I want it all to be
legitimate and as soon as I found out it wasn't I purchased a new CD. The
retailer wants $80 to install the program and I just do not have that. I am
on a pension and could hardly afford the new CD. But it is important to me to
use genuine Microsoft proudcts. Please help if you can and with fairly simple
terms.
I am able to go into the registry, but only with good instructions. I have
no idea what happens in the Bios or when you click F8 when you turn the
computer on, so if that has to be done, please let me know and give
instructions. I have looked in the FAQ about this and it does tell a little
about installing WINXP but not for my problem.

- Windows XP Support >> errors on pageon the bottom left i get "done with errors on page". several web sites i
also have problems with, it keeps asking for password over and over. on my
yahoo mail, it causes even more problems, most of the time i cant compose
mail or reply to mail due to errors on page. no one on the sites knows what
is the cause, they thought it was my java, but when i checked it, it passed
all the tests. now i dont know what to do. any ideas.
