Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files Dear support,
I just retuned from my hols. and plugged in the mem. card to my laptop with
XP. To my horror, the files I viewed with the default viewer on my XP laptop
corrupted the files. On one of the softwares it says that the header files
are corrupted. All the data is there in the file, but for some reason the
headers have been either removed or corrupted. When I click on the
"properties" for the jpg files (the corrupted ones) there is no summary
information. Is it now impossible to recover the files?
Thank you.

Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files What makes you believe that XP caused this problem? Your card might be
faulty or the files became corrupt in some other way.
As for recovering the files that might be possible providing the media
itself isn't damaged. Do a search for digital media recovery software

Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files Dear Harry,
I've spent the best part of three months searching, downloading and running
varios software fixes. Definitely XP caused the problem, I think the fax
viewer did it. All the files I did not open while connected were still
readable and uncorrupted. Only the one I opened were corrupted.

Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files Dear S.
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately it is NOT a problem with file
assosciation, but in fact a corrupted file that has an unreadable header.
Hence the reason whiy it cannot be opened.
Thank you once again.

Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files How did you find out that the unopened files were intact?
Unless you open them you won't know that they are OK!

Windows XP >> XP corrupts my JPG files Hello Pegasus.
I knew the unopened files were intact, because I later opened them on
another laptop with windows 2000. The corrupted files are also intact apart
from the headers, after making a copy of the file, I opened them with
notepad, and saw all the data. The difference being that there are no header
information contained in them. So, to recap, only the files viewed with the
viewer corrupted the files, the ones I did not view were all OK.
I hope this answers your question.
With Regards,
Thomas.

Since you didn't say what data recovery programs you used, I can only
suggest PhotoRescue from these folks:

http://www.datarescue.com/

I have used the program to retrieve client data successfully. If you've
already tried this, then the only thing left to do is send the memory card
to a professional data recovery firm. I prefer Drive Savers, but there are
others. Since you've been working with the memory card for 3 months (!)
there is no telling what state the data is now in but if the data is
important, it may be worth a try. Professional data recovery starts at
around $500USD and goes up from there.

Seagate Data Recovery Services - https://www.seagatedatarecovery.com/
