- Windows XP Network >> Lost networking to other computersTwice this has happened to me. The first time I fixed it
I had to completely reformat and reinstall Windows (not
for this reason). What has happened is that I have a
good networking connection with my two other computers in
my home, hooked up with a router via cable modem, and
within a month, I lose the networking and only get my own
computer listed in My Network. The router and printer is
running off an old P III 400 Mhz Windows 98 computer.
The two remote computers still have printer through this
network, but not able to share files.
Thanks,
CB

- Windows XP Support >> Help Deleting a Corrupt FileSomewhere along the line a corrupt restore was created. I noticed this when
a Defrag failed, specifying the restore point folder as the cause. I have
narrowed it down to a file in one of the sub-folders. I can't find a way to
delete it. It always tells me the file is corrupt. I have tried :
- Turning restore on and off. All restores deleted except this corrupt
folder.
- Overwriting the offending files with an empty notepad file
- Trying to delete with explorer.exe off
- Using a data cleaning tool
I could really do without reinstalling Windows. Any help very gratefully
received
Many thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Puzzled about laptop power schemes settings...Hi, All,
I am using a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, 3.06GHz HT, 1.25G RAM, WinXP.
I have only rarely used my laptop on battery power, and then for short
periods of time, so I have never paid attention to the Power Management
settings.
I have always had my power scheme set to "Maximum Performance" (Dell's
version of "Minimal Power Management"), with no problems.
I will be needing to use my laptop on battery power fairly frequently in the
near future, so I am trying to learn a bit about the Power Management
settings, so I can choose (or configure) the best scheme for me.
I do understand the various settings and options available under the Power
Options Properties, including the integral control of the SpeedStep processor
settings. The default settings for each of the available "schemes" basically
seem logical, BUT...
I have noticed one thing that has me really confused:
I was comparing the default settings for "Running on batteries" for the
various schemes, and all but one of the themes available for my machine shows
a shorter time set to enter "System standby" than for "Turn off hard disks"!
For instance, on my machine the default values for Battery operation are:
Under the "Maximum Performance" scheme, Turn off HD is set to 15 min. and
Standby is set to 5 min.
Under the "Portable/Laptop" scheme, Turn off HD is set to 30 min. and
Standby is set to 25 min.
Under the "Home/Office Desk" scheme, Turn off HD is set to 10 min. and
Standby is set to 5 min.
Under the "Minimum Power Management" scheme, Turn off HD is set to 15 min.
and Standby is set to 5 min.
I THOUGHT I understood what the standby function was all about. Now I'm not
so sure!
What has me confused is: WHY set the time to enter standby SHORTER than the
time to simply stop the disk?
It seems logical to me that the sequence should be display off, then disk
off, then standby, then hibernate. BUT all but one of the ten factory default
power schemes for battery operation on my laptop are set so that the standby
time is SHORTER than the disk off time!
My questions:
1) Why should the system be set to enter standby sooner than turning off the
disk?
2) Shouldn't the system turn off the hard drive automatically upon entering
standby mode?
3) Under what circumstances would the standby mode be bypassed in favor of
simply turning off the disk?
Thanks for any comments or advice. I realy want to understand this!

- Windows XP >> printing labels in Word 2002I have created a mail merge from a Word document to create labels. When I
try to print, they are not there, even though I can see them on the screen.
When I go to print preview there is nothing there. Am I doing something

- Windows XP Support >> IE help pleaseI have IE 6 xp home with sp1 and 2. Also google tool bar installed.
When browsing I sometimes get a smaller window web page open with extra info
on it. This page won't expand by dragging the corners and the little
maximise square is greyed out. The window is full of info that is much too
big to be read in this small window, so I can't read all of it. How can I
expand this window so I can read the whole page?
Is it something that I have on my laptop or some sort of setting that is
preventing me from viewing the page properly?
Many thanks for any help.
If this is the wrong news group, please can someone give me the correct name
of the right news group so I can post my problem there.
Thanks again

- Windows XP Hardware >> HELP! my hard drive formatting not stickingthought the 2 partitions on my new hard drive got
formatted cause I "tested" by copying some file to both
partitions and saw them on BOTH partitions and observed
when clicked "Propertie" for BOTH, saw tabs called
(1) "Sharing" & (2) "Quota", whatever those
are/significance, I don't know yet/understand. Then
proceeded to rename BOTH, also in the "Properties dialog
box" (the names that the partitioning AND formatting
program gave the 2 partitions were generic-sounding names
(like DRIVE2Vol#1 & DRIVE2Vol2, cause I hooked it up as
an INTERNAL drive to a computer running WinXP Home
Edition SP1. The new drive was the only hard drive other
than the other drive that's already in the computer
running as the bootup drive (in
other words, I hooked it up on the same cable as the
bootup drive, using the spare connector that was hanging
off of the cable...so I jumpered the new drive as a SLAVE
drive (in a 2 drives on 1 cable, which presumably is the
PRIMARY channel cable)).
Thinking I liked what I saw, I turned off PC, removed
hard drive, jumpered it as a "SINGLE" drive by removing
the jumper-thingy and put it in my EXTERNAL case that has
BOTH FireWire/USB 2.0 interfaces and hooked it back to
the same WinXP computer I used to format it, except this
time using USB. Turned it on after the computer, ONLY 1
partition is usable, by which I mean
(1) the "DRIVE2Vol2" lost that name and now takes on yet
still another generic-sounding name "Local Disk" and when
I
(2) clicked "Properties" for the partition that lost its
name, the 2 previously observed tabs above are not there
anymore, and
(3) when I double clicked on it to find the files I
copied to it when it was an INTERNAL drive, those files
weren't there and Windows asked me if I "wanted to format
the drive?" I'm not sure if I should click "Yes" button
to format it or not........thus I'm here in this forum
(AND I THOUGHT THE ABOVE MENTIONED PARTITIONING &
FORMATTING SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THE DRIVE SHOULD HAVE
FORMATTED IT--ALREADY!!!)
Now for some details, the HD is a WD 250GB Caviar and the
software that came with it is WD Data Lifeguard Tool
v11.0 version for Windows (vs. for DOS). I partitioned 2
equal partitions. The sizes shown before I removed it to
make into EXTERNAL HD were 116GB x 2 (BTW, should I have
only this much GB as usable after formatting?
18GB "lost", not usable for my own data? Is this
common?). When it's an EXternal drive, only 1 partitions
of 116GB shows up......the other "missing" asks if I want
to format it? HEEEEEEEEELP please!!!! Thank you! (Oh,
BTW, the SW asked me if I wanted to use the drive
as "additional data drive" or "a bootable drive"....or
something along those lines. I elected to use "additional
data drive".)

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Movie Maker closes when I try to add to TimelineI'm running WMM 2.1 on XP
I've been making a home movie using jpg's and wma files, and everything was
fine. Now, when i try to add anything to the timeline, WMM just closes, with
no error message - it just goes away !!
I've experimented by setting up a new dummy project and dragging jpg's down
to the timeline. On the 22nd one, the same thing happened. I reopened the
project i'm working on and counted the items on the timeline, and it was
21...... so it would seem the 22nd item will always cause this to happen !!!
Any help would be appreciated

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Defragmentation?Recently I've noticed when I run the Xp defragmentation program an additional
message appears. The message states the usual defragmentation is complete but
also states that some files couldn't be defragmentated and to check the
report for these files. When I do check the report I don't see any files
listed in the table of fragmentated files. Is this a problem?

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Problem with reopening projects
After saving my project and closing MM, when I reopen the project the time
line appears with all the content but the preview won't work. There seems to
be a problem with one of the transitions and it's not always the same one. I
have to find it by process of elimination. I adjust the offending transition
and all of a sudden preview starts working again. The problem reoccurs each
time I reopen the project. It's quite annoying.

- Windows XP >> Fax Console Crashes when closingMy Fax Console Crashes only upon closing it---but only on
one of the two accounts on the computer. I get the blue
screen that says at the top "Page Fault in Non-Paged

and then reboots back up just fine. I tried uninstalling
and re-installing the Windows component, and that didn't
help---even caused some problems. After it boots up, it
prompts to report the crash to MS, and goes to Online
Crash ANalysis where I get the report "Error Caused by
Device Driver." Can anyone tell me how I can solve this
problem please?? Thank you very much!

- Windows XP >> Application Popup Event 26I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 running on
an IBM Thinkpad T30. Recently, I began seeing
Application Popup events (Event 26). The message text
is "Application popup: Windows - System Error :
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."
I see this in two circumstances: When I attempt to
hibernate and (multiple times) when I resume after
Standby. Looking at the Event Viewer, I can see that the
event is issued every five minutes during the stand by
period.
The only change I can remember making just before this
started happening was to add 512m of RAM to bring the
total up to 1G.
