Windows XP Update >> All windows updates fail to download and install I'm working on a Toshiba Laptop for a client and see that starting September
14th all automatic updates fail with the exception of Office and Windows
Defender. I have tried to install updates manually and they fail. It will
download the new IE7, but when it starts the installation it fails also. I
have removed Norton Internet Security from the system with same results. I
have removed Windows Defender, also with same results. I have reset all of
the connection, security, and privacy settings in IE and still all Windows
updates fail. I have run tools to check errors on the registry as well as
scanned and removed any spyware and still updates fail. Any suggestions?
Office updates and Windows defender updates with download and install, just
not any Windows OS updates. The system is running Win XP Home SP2. I cant
seem to find what changed in September that is causing this issue.

Some problems have been cleared by
Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Note - the WU history will be lost but not important.
