My Sister-inlaw wanted to setup a new user account for
her husband, so he would have his own desktop Icons.
Before she made a change to her computer, my sister-inlaw
and her husband would just turn on the computer and the
computer would go right to her desktop without asking for
a user name or password.
She wanted to create a new limited account for him but
the computer would not allow her to create a limited
account, she had to create a new administrator account,
so she did.
When she restarted her computer she lost all of the Icons
on her desktop and her e-mail is not working. Now she is
in panic mode and want to put everything back to the way
it was.
I told her to go to user account in the control panel and
see if there is an account called Administator and there
is no user account called Administrator just the new one
she created, Then I told her to go Windows Explorer and
see if there is a folder called Administrator/Desktop.
When she went to the desktop folder she found that all of
her desktop icons are there.
Is there a way to change her computer back to the way it
was or have the computer log back into the Administrator
account like it used too?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> SERVICES.EXE - Extremely large HD I/O on every boot - system crawlI cannot figure this one out... I hope somebody here has a clue about this.
I have a workstation where on every boot, it will have a very large amount
of hard drive IO for about 15 minutes. My first thoughts were Virus Scan or
Windows Defender. I did some digging using SysInternal's Process Explorer
and FileMon.
What I found surprised me... The culprit was SERVICES.EXE. According to
Process Explorer, the only two service threads hosted under that process are
EventLog and PlugPlay. However, from what I understand, SERVICES.EXE is also
the host of the SCM, so all other services are spawned from it... Although
they are in their own unique processes, so I am assuming I wouldn't see hard
drive I/O in services.exe related to deeper service.
FileMon revealed that SERVICES.EXE is "touching" every single file on my
hard drive. It does the following to each file: Open, Query Information,
Query Security, Set Security, Close.
Fifteen minutes later, it's done.
What is going on here?
Some additional information...
- SERVICES.EXE - I/O Reads: 600, I/O Writes: 13,565, I/O Other: 897,745
- Entire hard drive is cleared of all NTFS auditing entries (SACL)
- Audit object access is disabled in security policy settings
- Nothing shows up in the System or Application event logs, except normal
messages, such as "event log service started" and then each various service
starting and a few .NET 2.0 Runtime errors (shim database error - known issue
from MS and unrelated).
- Virus scanner is McAfee and windows defender beta is running, but neither
process shows disk usage and both have automatic scheduled system scans
disabled.

I have over 140 icons in my Quick Launch tray and, once in a while, when I
boot, they are all jumbled up. Is there a way to keep them in the same
order I want them (or, better yet, is there a simple way to put them back
where they were)? I know I can use System Restore - but, as just happened,
I uninstalled Diskeeper - then rebooted. This time, the icons are all
jumbled up and I don't want Diskeeper entries put back in my Registry.

- Windows XP Update >> DSL modem dissapears after installing SP1I have downloaded XP sp1 but after it reboots to finalise the installation it
shows no modem and the drivers will not reinstall because it doesn't see a
modem connected to the system. The sp1 itself shows no problems and installs
fine and when I uninstall sp1 my modem "like magic" is back and working fine,
I've tried the AOL helpline and they said they haven't a clue what it can be
and advised me to just do without the sp1 update(great eh!). The connection
is PPPoE, I have reinstalled the AOL software, the modem software (which is
all on the AOL CD), I have updated the modem software, I have tried sp1 and
sp1a all with the same results. HHHHEEEELLLPPPPP

This is the first time I am using a forum to try to fix my XP problem.
I was running a DVD when the picture froze. I close the DVD, restarted
the DVD by popping it in and out. The movie was good for 10 minutes
and it froze again.
This time I could shut it down. I finally did a hard shut down.
After that, I removed my DVD and try restarting. I gave me a blank
screen with a blinking cursor. My keyboard, mouse can't control
anything.
I tried to use my recovery disc and the PC is not reading it. What's
happening. How can I fix this?

Problem reading files after burning them to DVD or CD
I have tried burning MPEG & AVI files to both DVD & CD media with poor results. Of the three DVD's I have burned, some of the (mpeg or avi) files play, while others cause the drive to "hang" with the light on front of drive flashing for a long period, but nothing ever happens.
I thought perhaps I needed an udated driver or something, but your site says non exist/or are needed.

Some DVD writers and players have trouble with specific brands of media. We recommend using TDK, Maxell, Verbatim, Pioneer, Ritek or Princo media. We also advise buying new media brands in small amounts until you find one that works best. Also, a firmware upgrade might allow you to write on some brands of media. For more information on upgrading your firmware, access the following web site:
http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html . You will find instructions on downloading and installing new firmware. If you encounter difficulty, reply to this message with the following information so we may further assist you:
- IDE controller chipset
- Drive ID
- Model number
- Firmware version you were trying to install
- ASPI version
- Error message
- Software used and version number
- Brand of media and type (speed and +/-)
To identify the IDE controller chipset on a Windows XP computer, click on the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel." Double-click on the "System" icon. Select the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. Look in the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" section.
To obtain the Drive ID on a Windows XP computer, open the Start menu and select the "Control Panel." Double-click the System icon and select the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager button. Click on the plus sign next to "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and your drives will be listed in this section

Thanks for your reply. Regarding the media type Iâ??m using, I have owned several CD-RW drives and never had any problems with any media type Iâ??ve used, as I buy whatever is on sale at the time. This DVD-RW drive is not only malfunctioning with the DVD media I have (which is CompUSA Brand), it is also malfunctioning with all of the CD media I have, which I used successfully on all my previous CD-RW Drives. Therefore, it seems to be something isolated with this particular DVD-RW Drive which is I/O magic internal 8X, model IDVDRW8D.
I am willing to attempt your suggestion of updating my firmware, however, after installing DVDinfo per your websiteâ??s instructions, I still donâ??t see where it identifies my driveâ??s ID String? Can you just tell me (based on the info Iâ??m providing) which firmware update to download?
Regarding the chipset ID, I looked in device manager, it has the following:
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
VIA BUS Master Controller
When I click on them, I see nothing mentioning a â??chipset IDâ?? ?
Drive ID = DVDRW IDE1008
Model # = IDVDRW8D
Firmware Version Iâ??m currently running (per DVDinfo) = 0054
Software Iâ??m using = NTI CD&DVD Maker 6.5 Platinum

You have a VIA chipset.To update this, Visit http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300 and download the latest Via 4 in 1 driver for your chipset
- Unzip the file to your desktop
- Double-click the executable that appeared on your Desktop
- Restart your computer after the update has been installed

I went to http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html for â??ID STRING (DVDRW IDE 1008)â?? and downloaded â??LiveUpdateSetup.exeâ?? After installing it, I ran it and keep getting the windows error msg â??LiveUpdate has encountered a problem and needs to close.â??
I then decided to download â??1008IM-0458.ZIPâ?? after extracting, I executed and it came up with a â??windows flash programâ?? window in which it stated â??Device Revision: 0054â??
Since I know I am already running version 0054, should I still do this?

Thank you for writing regarding your Internal 8X DVD±RW/±R Dual Format Drive.
You do not need to update the firmware as you already have the latest firmware update.
Please also try the following:
Check that the IDE cable (flat gray cable) is plugged in with the red stripe going towards the right, and also that the power connector is plugged in.
The DVD/CDRW and a CDROM should not share the same cable if at all possible. Make sure if you have one device on the IDE cable(flat gray cable), you have the jumper for that device set to Master (MA).
If you have more than one device on the same IDE cable, then one of them needs to be set to Master (MA), and one to Slave (SL).
The DVD RW works best when set as Master on the Secondary IDE controller. If you already have a Master on the Secondary IDE controller, you must change the jumper on it to Slave.
If you continue to have problems, from the Desktop click Start, then click run and type sysedit. This will bring up the system editor with a series of windows. The first of which is "autoexec.bat". Here, look for any lines which may have "cdrom" or "mscdex". If found, type REM, then a space in front of these lines. Close autoexec.bat and save changes. Do the same for the next window, config.sys. Close the rest of the windows and reboot.
Some computer companies such as Compaq like their cd drives to have their jumper set to "CS" (cable select).
If you are still having trouble with Windows recognizing the drive, try changing the jumper the CS position.
Also,if this does not work,You can download the latest drivers
from:

In the box for category choose DVD writers
In the box for product choose Internal 8X DVD±RW/±R Dual Format Drive.
Download and install the update.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately, we've gotten off track here.
As I stated in the initial portion of this ticket, it's not that the drive doesn't work. It's that it doesn't record consistantly (for lack of a better description). I'll dump some MPEG's to a DVD, some of the files will play, some won't. Same with a CD, I dump some MP3's, some will play, some won't. All files in question play fine off the hard drive, so it's not the files, it's the DVD-RW Drive.
This is getting very frustrating, any ideas?

Hi,
I did go ahead and flash my drive to 0758 as you instructed. Unfortunately, it has not corrected the problem. I burned 3 DVD's an 2 CD's after the update. 2 DVD's have a few files working with a couple not. 1 DVD nothing works. About the same for the 2 CD's.
I no longer have the packaging my drive came in, but I think it's about time to discuss a refund. I have wasted about $30 worth of blank media as well as my time and inconvenience.

In all honesty, I'm REALLY not dying to take my system apart, wait for the drive to reach you, wait for a replacement to get back to me, take my system apart again and re-install the same brand, unless this will definitely fix it. Is there a known problem with this drive, or am I in the minority? If you can give any other suggestions to get this working, I'm all ears? Why would this thing record one file perfectly ok, and another (on the same disc, same session) be corrupt, or whatever it is that's going wrong?

I have tried to chat with Compaq tech online and was given BIOS with same
date as the one they have on their website. The system will turn itself
completely off whenever it wants. It is a Compaq presarion 5000 5012US with
XP Pro.

connection. I would like to have my computer share it's connection with my
bluetooth pda. However, in the Internet Connection Sharing process, my
computer must be assigned the same IP address that the router must be
assigned. Is there anyway my computer can be setup as an access point for my
pda without the IP address mess. Thank you very much for your help in

with "Remember each folder's settings" checked and unchecked. I've

I usually don't post to these groups, because I can usually find
the answer I am looking for by doing a group search. I do have a
question, that I was unable to find the answer for in previous posts.
I have 3 computers, 2 Desktops (both built by myself) and a Dell
Laptop. I bought the retail version of Win XP home edition. I also have
the OEM version of XP home edition. My "MAIN" computer I do a lot of
upgrading on, motherboard, CPU etc. and I have the RETAIL version in
that computer. My "Community" computer, I call it that, because anyone
who needs to use a computer is allowed on the community computer, NOT
my MAIN computer, thats for my use only. Anyway, the "community"
computer has the OEM version of XP on it. My Dell laptop of course came
with it's own OEM version of XP. My question is this: If I upgrade the
"Community" computers motherboard, that makes the copy of XP that is on
it invalid (OEM copy) do I have to purchase the OEM version again, or
can I buy an OEM LICENSE, without the actual XP CD. I have seen these

what someone would do with just the license key, unless you are able to
use it with your original OEM CD, after doing a major upgrade to the
computer that the OEM software is installed on. Can anyone enlighten me

- Windows XP Network >> Installed new DSL, LAN troubledI just went from cable to DSL and the install really jacked me up.
My LAN doesn't allow file sharing anymore even though its there and I have
some LINUX computer remotely connecting to my comp. every time i go online
and i cant stop the connection. I guess i just want to restore the defaults
for my whole network. I can't find a way to, need help please!

- Windows XP Update >> Security Account Manager initialization Failed to start. Isass.exI have problem logging into the system after my installation. The error
encountered is "Directory services cannot start , with errorStatus
0xc00002e1. also Isass.exe- system error.
I have reboot into directoty service restore mode. I understand i need to
use NTDS UTIL Tools at the command prompt.
Can one explain what to do next as I have been stuck with these for days.I

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> msconfigI'm using XP Pro, and cable modem for internet connection. Something uses my
connection and uploads bytes and this speeds down my connection. All the
updates have been done and entire HDD checked for the viruses. Under the
startup menu of msconfig, i unchecked all the boxes [nvcpl(first), avgcc32,
ccapp, ccregvfy, ctfmon, msmsgs, nerocheck, nvcpl (second), nvmctray, nwiz,
soundman, timeupdate] and restarted the PC. It works like this, but when when
i choose the normal startup the problem begins again. Anybody knows how i can
get out of this ? Thanks.

Whenever i i want to run my viruschecking programs they just shutdown after 1 sec.
Also when i try to type the word virus on the internett it shuts down.
My ctrl-alt -delete doesn't work either. So i got a virus. Is it anyone that recognize this is virus and knows how to deal with it please reply.
Ps. is svchost a virus to?
It takes a lot of my cpu memory.

- Windows XP >> two problemsI have two problems I would like some advice on:
1. Every time I try to use my Search function, I get a pop up of Windows
Installer wanting the CD for Windows Office 2K Pro. I can't figure out why,
and I have to hit Cancel several times to make it stop. What is the problem?
and how do I fix it? It just started doing this about 10 days ago, the same
time as problem 2 popped up.
2. Recently, someone else used my computer for web surfing and managed to
get it infected with Spylocked 4.0. I got some help on another forum, and
the fix worked. However, in the instructions for the fix it says to restart
the computer in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during restart, before the Windows
logo appears. I could not get it to work that way, no matter what I did. My
computer just went right on with its normal start up routine, as if I wasn't
hitting F8 at all, or doing anything else for that matter. Did I miss
something, do something wrong, or has this infernal machine lost its little
electronic mind? Or maybe I've lost mine....
Anyway, thanks in advance for any help or advice. Truthfully, it would help
to know I am not the only one with either problem, I wouldn't feel like such
a bonehead.

- Windows XP Support >> .exe and .lnk files do not workHi all,
used my show desktop icon earlier to minimise all my windows and my
windows media player went full screen and could not do anything to
minimise it.
Not even pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, ALT+ENTER, ESC, ALT+F
Anyway, switched off PC......
...switched back on, now none of my shortcuts work and I cannot run
any .exe files.
"Windows not can find a program associated with .lnk file extension"
Trying to run a .exe file does work, so cannot run Help and Support,
System Restore, regedit, msconfig, adaware or anything!
any ideas welcome

- Windows XP Security >> Access Denied when running MsConfig w/ admin rightsI'm trying to run PC in diagnostic mode on Standalone PC with XPPro-sp2, and
I am getting "An Access denied error occurred while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on to an Administrator account to make the
specified changes." Now, I've made no changes recently to any programs or
hardware, and I have administrative permissions so I don't understand what is
going on. Safe Mode (all three safe options) fail, or hang at (Agp440.sys
line). Theres no evidence of a viral agents at work or scumware. I had a
similar "legit" problem with msconfig due to a boot volume info folder virus
about a month ago, and I wound up having to reinstall XP SP2 from scratch. Is
there a way to verify, or fix this problem short of having to attempt an "In
place repair" ??
My thinking is that settings in the registry have somehow become corrupted.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Phone and modem control panel can not be openedI bought a laptop that came with Win XP Pro already
installed (I think it is installed off of an image?), and
when I go into control panel and double click on "Phone
and Modem Option" icon, I get an error message saying
"Phone And Modem control panel can not be opened.You may
have a problem starting telephony service."
I saw an article on Microsoft Knowledgebase about possibly
replacing two dlls located in System32 directory.

So I replaced two files
cfgmgr32.dll
Setupapi.dll
But that did not solve the problem.
Is microsoft aware of this problem?
I do not know what trigger this to get screwed up, but I
found there are several people having same problems (found
