- Windows XP Network >> Mapping in XP Home VersionI have several computers (4) that I network in a small
office. When I trying mapping a directory on each
computer, every time you reboot, network connection for
that mapping fails and the login process and password has
to be redone. In the help file, it states there is an
option to "save password" on the login display. It does
not show. Am I missing something?

- Windows XP >> Notification barWhen you right click on the taskbar and when you
select "properties". You will get the screen "Taskbar
and Start Menu Properties". Then when you click
customize in that same windows you will get a list of
notifications. Under "Past Items" I got a great list of
notification items of programs that aren't on my computer
anymore. I was wondering if I can clear that list
of "Past Items"
Please email me your response

- Windows XP Support >> Start Up (turning on computer)When trying to turn on my computer - it stays locked up on the "Microsoft
Windows XP" screen with the windows flag... Bar at the bottom keeps going
across, but goes no further than that screen...
I could shut it down and start over in "Safe Mode" with no problem.
Does anyone know the problem why I can't start up on normally? I can't
figure it out.

- Windows XP >> Updates for Computer Not Dowloading or InstallingI got my son a new computer for Christmas and took his old computer. I just
realized that updates are not installing on this computer, and no updates
have installed since May of 2006. Automatic updates is on, and it is set to
automatically install. I went to the update website, click express or
custom, and it says "Files Required to Use Microsoft Update are No Longer
Installed - Click to Fix" I click to fix, and it says installing, and takes
me back to the express/custom page, and then I do it again, and get the same
message.
I am at a loss!! I cannot find any support info on this. If anyone can
help, it would be greatly appreciated!!

- Windows XP >> Data WiperHello,
I have a PC in full working order, full admin access, OS is XP Home.
There are lots of programmes on the hard drive none of which I have the
software for this includes the OS.
Before returning this PC, I have been asked to get rid of some very
sensitive material held in files, correspondence and so on, ( not porn ),
that if in the wrong hands would stir up old wounds which are slowly healing
Of course the simplest way would be to physically destroy the existing HD
and replace it, in this instance I can't to this.
I spent last night using the dustbin and Norton deleting files, wiped
restore points and so on, however I know these files or a lot of them are
still lurking on the HD and could be retrieved.
Question,
WITHOUT wiping the HD or reformatting it is there some freebie software I
can download that will go some way in overwriting the files I have deleted
thus making it that more difficult to retrieve any files I have deleted?
PLEASE REMEMBER, I cannot wipe, destroy or reformat the existing HD.
Finally, there is a programme installed on the HD called Billminder, a
simple programme to remind one of upcoming bills to pay, this programme has
been password protected, is there a place in XP, ( the registry ), where I
might look for passwords, if there is could someone tell me how I get to
this, I also ask the same question for and E-mail account?

- Windows XP >> problems with floppy drive and XP HomeI saved several files on 3.5" floppy disks (brand new,
formatted for Windows 2000/XP). I formatted each disk
before use, in case there were any problems with them out
of the box and copied my files onto them just fine. Now
that I've completed my restore I am in the process of
copying those files back onto the HDD. The problem is
that the first file on each disk (no matter what order
they are listed in; alphabetically, date modified, etc.)
will NOT copy or move over. I get two different errors,
that seem to vary from disk to disk. The first one reads
as "Error reading from specified file or disk". The
second error reads as "Cannot copy/move <filename>. Data
error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)". To be honest, this
happens no matter what floppy disk I use on this XP
machine. And yes, I have tried several 3.5" drives, but
to no avail. The only floppy disks that XP seems to read
are FAT16 and FAT32 formatted disks, and only then if said
disks were formatted on a Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
machine. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Slow login to serverI've just implemented a new Server2003 in a mixed XP Pro
and Win2K environment. The single XP Pro workstation
configured to connect to this server takes about 3 minutes
to log in yet any of the Win2K stations configured log in
without any noticeable delay. The XP station has been
clearly made a member of the new domain, the accounts have
been defined, and since its only the XP station, I think
its more of a local rather than a server problem.

- Windows XP >> sp2 installed turns off Windows FirewallIs that OK? Is it intentional? Is it needed?
What does Microsoft have to say about the many users who are asking how to
turn on the firewall?
If it was a mistake, why doesn't Microsoft issue a fix? Or, is there a fix?
Thanks...jb

- Windows XP Support >> Did ECS K8M800M2's onboard network die?Recently, I was using the computer and surfing on the Web. Then, all the
sudden Windows XP Professional SP2 (all updates) said network cable was
unplugged. I checked the CAT5 ethernet/network cable cable, and it was
fine. I tried another cable, and the onboard network didn't detect it
either. I checked both cables on my old Apple PowerBook G4, and they had
no problems.
I even tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and upgrading the VIA VT823x
PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (from Windows Update). Also, reinstalled VIA
4in1 Hyperion driver. None of them helped or changed anything that I
noticed.
Does this sound like the onboard network died? :( I am currently using
wireless USB network which isn't very stable and slow. Thank you in advance

Windows XP Update >> Installation Failure
After succesfully downloading 'X10 Wireless Technology Inc. - Other Hardware
- X10 USB Firecracker Interface (ACPI-compliant) update'. The installation
failed and revealed an error code: 0x80070103.
When I tried to re-install this software from Windows Update Home, I didn't
find it any more.
My question is How can I re-install this software again? Can anybody help!

- Windows XP Setup >> 2 "administrators" - can I junk one?Another "how do i get rid of that damn startup password"
question again, but this time with a interesting twist!
Here's my situation:
I have 2 users, the "Administrator" and another, with
administrator rank. I'm the only one who uses the
machine, and want to disable the startup password.
Here's the problem:
I think I can do this by removing the secondary
administrator and just letting it boot up as the default
admin (is this what it does it the login screen time's
out?). BUT... I have all my settings, firewall program
access issues (ie: AIM won't start unless i log in with
my startup password), etc etc under the secondary user
(my name, with admin status). When I skip the password
screen, or let it time out, I have all sorts of
problems.
SO, My question:
Since the second user (my name) has full admin status, is
it safe to remove the actual "Administrator" user? If I
do this, will I be able to disable the password screen
and have it load the correct settings? If not, is it
possible to transfer all the settings for the second
administrator and junk it, and then run only as the
primiary Administrator?
I know this is a very "special" situation I've gotten
myself into, so anyone who has the knowledge and the
time... your thoughts are WELCOME!
Thanks!

- Windows XP Network >> Accessing shared folder on XP Pro machine from XP Home machineHi, I'm having trouble getting from Home to shared folders on XP - I can't
see the computer under the "view workgroup computers" but I can access it via
typing in the IP address under Run. My main issue is setting up security so
that only certain users can, from across the network, get to certain shared
folders. I've setup the usernames and passwords, and limited the shared
folders to those certain users, but when I try to access them remotely, I
don't get a prompt to enter in a username and password, and I'm just denied
access outright. How can I cure this?
Many, many thanks for your help!

- Windows XP Support >> Deleting a Wireless Network ConnectionHELP HELP I desperately need some help here. Somehow, a new wireless network
connection got created on my laptop I use at home so that I can access the
internet from anywhere in my house via a Netgear router that's connected to
the main computer in my office. I need to know how to delete this network.
I've searched everywhere in help and support, faq's, everything I could think
of. All that I could find was info on how to delete the entire wireless
network connections folder. If I do that, I will lose my network connection
which I have no idea how to set it back up. It got screwed up once before and
it took me 3 days and a lot of time on the telephone to get it going again.
All help will be very much appreciated.
