- Windows XP Network >> What causes Windows Sockets to get corrupt? This happened to one workstation back in Aug. 2005. This morning I'm
working and the next thing I know the internet connectivity is gone and
the phone software became disabled. Performing a Ping makes the
workstation beep and an extended character was listed (Pinging ä with 32
bytes of data:) but the ping completed. After swapping out the net card
with no change, I booted into W2K and everything worked fine. I realized
it was an XP issue so I booted back into XP and at a command prompt
typed "netsh winsock reset", which cleared the problem up.
What causes this corruption? It there any known issues?

- Windows XP >> System restore, where are the back up filesAfter being unable to get into windows, I did a system
restore using the restore cd. Now I need to know where
it backed up the files to, so I can get them back. Did
it remove all of my programs? In the restore section,
going through windows, it won't let me pick another date
to restore from, I was going to just go back to another
day.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Can't access private folderHey. I had xp home installed on one partition of my hard drive, and had
relocated My Documents to another partition. I had it set to Private. I
didn't have xp home for all that long before i reinstalled it (about a
month). After the reinstall, i changed My Documents to where i had it on the
second partition, but when i tried to access the folder it gives the same
message that you would get if you trying to access a private folder from a
different user.
I've checked in the properties menu, and "Make this folder private" is not
checked. I even attempted to share the folder on the network I got an error
saying i don't have permission to access the drive. Does anyone know how I
can access it? It has a lot of important stuff in there.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP SP2I believe I have found a small problem after updating three
computers to SP2. Each computer was updated from the MS
update site via a broadband connection.
After the update I noted on my desktop that I could not
change the home page in Internet Explorer. On the desktop
and my laptop I had been using Google News as a home page.
Wanting to make a change I used the Tools Menu in IE to
select a new home page.
Much to my surprise IE would not change and kept going back
to Google News. I looked for and found a Knowledge Base
Article, back up the registry and did the changes the hard
way by editing the registry. The didn't work. (I am not an
expert on this.)
Read messages for same problems on the internet news groups
and everyone said you had a virus or spyware. All three of
our computers run Adware and Norton's virus programs and are
up to date. Ran Adware again on my desktop to make sure.
Nothing.
Went to Kelly's Korner for a possible registry script. He
had two, but were to lock or unlock the home page after it
has been set by the user. I ran the unlock. No go. I ran
the lock and it did blank out so that you could not make any
changes. Ran the unlock again and it allowed changes which
would not work.
After working with the desktop I started on the laptop which
used the same home page and found that I couldn't change it.
Went to my wife's computer which used a different home page
and again I could not change it.
So all three computers that were updated via MS update site
would not allow a user to change the home page in IE. It
is no big deal as one can create a shortcut to the site you
want to use as a home page, however I still can't figure out
why they could not be changed.
Any recommendations or help will be appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Windows Messenger 5.0 hangs while on VPNHello.
I am running Windows Messenger 5.0.0468 on an XP Pro 2002 SP2
machine.
WM is used in a corporate environment.
While I am logged on in my office.. it works like a champ.
When I VPN in (Cisco VPN Client for Windows) via SBC DSL connection,
WM open and just hangs without displaying contacts.
What I've tried so far:
1) Followed Jonathan Kay's instructions http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=16
(Port 3389 was already being used)
2) Disabled windows firewall
3) Disabled DSL firewall
4) Disabled both Windows & DSL Firewall
5) Looked for Trillian plug-ins (couldn't find one)
6) Banged my head on the keyboard multiple times leaving an
impression
of a backwards V B N M on my forehead
7) Took a few shots of tequila
Obviously, none of these helped (except the tequila or the head
banging made forget there was a problem for a while).
Can anyone suggest something for me to try or an alternative client?
TIA

- Windows XP Support >> Need help with Memory LeakI am experiencing a memory leak, and I need help with figuring out what
to do. Is there something I can run to try and identify the culprit?
Once of the svchost.exe processes generally starts at around 29,256K.
The longer I leave my PC up, the more it just keeps growing. I went
away on vacation for a week, and the process had grown to 300,000+K.
Using TaskList /svc, this is what shows
Image Name: svchost.exe
Services:
AudioSrv, CryptSvc, Dhcp, dmserver,
EventSystem, helpsvc, lanmanserver,
lanmanworkstation, Netman, Nla, RasMan,
seclogon, SENS, ShellHWDetection, srservice,
TapiSrv, Themes, uploadmgr, W32Time,
winmgmt, wuauserv, WZCSVC
Is there anything obvious?
Can anyone help me or suggest how to locate the problem?
Thanks

Windows XP Update >> missing updates fail to display after restoring system from backup
Just restored a system with Stompsoft PC Backup from a backup made in late
12/05. Had to use with "overwrite all files" option due to an incomplete
software uninstall when System Restore failed to restore the prior
configuration. Running XP Pro SP2 with all patches up to and including
recent WMF patch installed prior to the restore.
Restored from DVD (standard backup, not a disaster recovery backup),
rebooted, then ran Microsoft Update expecting to have all of the interval
updates since the backup display as available. However, none did. "Review
Your Update History" lists all updates that had been installed prior to the
backup, with the last updates dated 12/13/05.
No errors were listed, but I tried recreating the update database, and still
have nothing show as available
Thanks,
David P. Lurie

- Windows XP >> can't move filesLately I am unable to move newly created Drive Image
backup files. I get the following error message: "The
volume for a file has been externally altered so that the
opened file is no longer valid." I can, however, delete
these files, and I can move other files on my backup
drive. Any idea what's causing this problem and how to fix
it? Please send me an email, as I may never be able to
navigate back to the right place in this newsgroup. Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Minor "graphic" annoyanceI'm not sure if this would qualify as a graphic annoyance, but it is a
annoying and ugly (or at least not neat).
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2
When I start my computer and log into my account, the My Computer icon is
the first icon on my desktop. It has a dotted outline around the text "My
Computer". If I click the desktop anywhere and then the taskbar (in that
order) the dotted line vanishes and does not re-appear. However, the dotted
outline does appear in some programs like WMP11, for example.
The dotted outline is like that of the Windows 98 dotted outline. I think
it's ugly and I never used to have it with XP. I can't remember when this
started, but it seems to me not that long ago. I also don't remember if I
made any system changes that might have caused this annoyance. I did play
with MSCONFIG a long time ago and unchecked almost everything in the startup
list except for about 4 or 5 items.
I would like to get rid of this little dotted border once and for all! Does
anyone know how I can? Registry edit? Or perhaps through the Windows
Interface? Thanks in advance!
P.S. When I check the "Notify me of replies" box in this window (post a
comment window, that is) I get that ugly border around the text also. Okay,
now it's gone...but it'll be back!

- customize >> roaming profileHi,
I have created a roaming profile for my user account, but there is one small
problem. How do I stop it from copying the entire roaming profile to the
local profile.
For example, my roaming profile is on D:\profile. When i log on, it loads
and copies all the contents in d:\profile to c:\documents and
settings\username. How do I stop this?
Thanks,
Tim.

- Windows XP Security >> Disable third party extensionsIn a previous posting I was advised to disable 3rd party extensions and to deny permission to change settings back to allow them within Internet Explorer to stop users from downloading. This works along with some registry tweaks but I am finding that users can change this setting back.
How do I set it so they cant change the settings back?

- Windows XP Network >> Internet Connection Icon (connectoid)I have an ADSL router/firewall which connects to my ISP. This occasionally
goes down. Up to now I had an Internet Connection Icon in "Network
Connections" which I could click on to reconnect the ADSL router. This has
vanished and all attempts to get it back have failed. I also note that out of
three XP boxes on the same network only one ever had this icon.
I have tried all "825826" fixes which bring back the annoying dissapearances
of Network Connections but they don't fix the Internet Connection.
The machine is quite happy to connect to the internet but now I have to
power cycle the router when external the connection goes down. This isn't
very clever. Can anyone help please.

- Windows XP >> Cannot Log On To Windows XPI removed a "user" from my computer and rebooted. The
screen asks me to choose an account o log on with, but
there are no choices. If I hit ctrl+alt+del I am prompted
with a username and password. I don't know what to put in
since the only two accounts are the administrator's and
the guest's....neither are password enabled.
Thanks

fonts other than resizing (doesn't work)?
