- Windows XP Network >> Two modems on one phone line -- Problem?I'm going to be travelling abroad soon and want to make sure I can get
an internet connection where I am.
Where I'll be there is broadband coming in on a phone line to a modem
(yeah, just a plain ol' modem, not a router-modem).
However, the same phone line is available to a number of rooms in the
house.
Can I hook up another modem to the phone socket in my room and get the
same quality broadband connection?
Will my connection, assuming it is possible, adversely affect others
taking broadband from the same phone line?
Is it likely the ISP will object to two modems hooked up to the phone
line (or want more money)?
Will be grateful for any comments as I am quite clueless on this
matter.

- Windows XP Security >> 16-bit %TEMP% is broken in XP, stillI just spent the past week with some tier 1 tech at Microsoft assisted
support. He believes I'm insane.
16-bit apps use the System settings for TEMP and TMP, which points to
%systemroot%temp, which don't work with limited user accounts.[1] Only the
user that created certain temporary files can change or erase them, and
other users won't be able to use those apps.
By comparison, Win2K SP3 and earlier make 16-bit apps use the User settings
for TEMP and TMP, which points to %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp.
Starting with Win2K SP4, this was broken like XP is, but a patch supplied
under KB 840214 changed that behaviour back.
Now XP's used the wrong 16-bit TEMP behaviour since its release. At least
US English versions have. I can't seem to convince this tech at Microsoft
that this is a problem that needs fixing.
[1] Yes, there's no guarantee 16-bit apps can work with limited accounts -
that's my problem and it's usually fixed by granting Modify access to Users
to the app's installation folder. I don't want to do this to
%systemroot%\temp because it will expose that to abuse - system processes
and services store their temp files here and it's possible to break them by
messing with temporary files here.

- Windows XP >> Still trying to download deleted messages?Not strictly an XP question but I have posted it in 2 general PC help groups
and still can't resolve it. Maybe someone here can help?
Both Mailwasher and OE6 tell me that they're downloading 50 messages I had
previously deleted from MW. New messages arrive on top of these 50 phantom
ones and I get them OK. MW also tells me I am trying to delete 50 messages
which may have been deleted by another application! Tried accessing Tiscali
webmail, can login OK but cannot view mail there, just get a blank white
page with "Done" at the bottom. Is the problem with
MW, OE or Tiscali?

They have all downloaded OK, but when I try to install them they all fail
with error 80070005. Non-critical ones (e.g. Windows Media Player) installed

- Windows XP Network >> Software to monitor NIC/Wireless portIs there any free software to monitor the NIC/Wireless port. All
software I have found have common features, but some features I am
really looking for are missing.
Features I would like:
A. Know what program/file is communicating with the network
B. How much bandwidth is the program utilizing currently and also
keeps a total for the time the program is ran.
C. Real-Time, either able to log or watch
All software I found just tells what IP's, protocol, and numerous
other handy stuff. But without knowing what software/files are
communicating defeats some purposes. I know some firewalls monitor
stuff im asking for, but I do not want to install those.
A good example of what im looking for is something as follows:
Firefox.exe - TCP - 200.12.57.21 - 54.6K
blah.dll - UDP - 200.12.57.21 - 3.4K
Instead of:
192.168.1.3 makes a TCP call to 200.12.57.21

- Windows XP Support >> Hard disk LED on with or without activityWindows XP Pro SP2
Hard drive light was working normally - on off. Ran system hibernate for
first time, came out of hibernate and hard disk LED stays on all the time.
Shutting down and restarting normally doesn't stop the behavior. Disabled
hibernate, didn't help. Not a hardware problem, hard disk LED flashes on and
off while starting, then remains on when Windows loads. Hard drive activity
causes the LED to become brighter, but the LED never goes off. I heard that
this is similar to a Windows NT/2000 problem, but MS doesn't have a solution
yet. How do I fix this?

I just added a new Dell desktop (running XP Pro) on my home network, and am unable to see it on any of the other machines when looking under 'Entire Network' / Workgroup (ie, my laptop (XP PRO) and my other desktop (2000)). However, I can ping the new machine and access it from the Run command on either machine by simply typing in the new desktops IP address from either the laptop or the desktop, but for some reason it will NOT show up on my laptop or on my desktop machines under the Workgroup. In addition, my laptop now fails to show ANY of the other machines on my network too. I have double checked the Workgroup names (ie, all are set at WORKGROUP) , can ping each machine, etc
Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks much

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the
Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Thanks for responding. No, not as far as I know they don't. It seems stange because I can indeed connect to each of the the other computers via the ip address through the run option - from there I can get to (and use) the printers etc., but under my workgroup on my laptop I know see nothing - yet the laptop, etc can be seen from the other machines. I have tried various options listed by others to no avail.
Thanks again - any other ideas appreciated

Randy,
You've got a problem with the browser service on your LAN. Nine times out of
ten, a firewall blocking file sharing services turns out to be the culprit.
You're the tenth.
Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.
Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system with each ipconfig listing.

My Laptop - running XP Pro - has both a wireless card and plug-i
My New Dell Computer - running XP Pro - uses a network car
My Old Desktop - running Windows 2K - network car
On my OLD (2K) desktop - I can ping both of the other machines - and access shared folders (and printer on the new Dell) via run but can NOT see the Dell in my Network Place
On my Laptop - I can ping both of the other machines, see shared resources, etc - but can NOT see EITHER of the other two computers in My Network Places
On my new Dell Desktop (XP Pro) - i can see and access both of the other computers in My Network Places

What antivirus protection to you have on each computer?
You say "I can ping" do you mean that ping by both name and by ip address is
successful? IOW, do all 3 computers resolve name to address of both other
computers successfully? Name resolution is as important here as connectivity.
Let's try something new. The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what
browsers you have in your workgroup.

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
Browstat needs no install, and it's very small (40K) - just copy it to a folder
on your system that's in the Path. Then type "browstat status", just as you
would "ping laptop".
Once you are used to browstat, copy it onto each computer, then:
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post. I
want to compare exactly what each computer sees as browsers on the LAN.

OK, I am using Symantic Corporate Edition for my email, etc, but have not installed the firewall - this is used on all machines. My routher is a netgear MR 314 Wireless Router- the wireless is used for my laptop, the other machines are connected via cable. I have a cable modem
I can ping all of the machines from each other by the IP address on my LAPTOP. In addition, I WAS able to map drives (on LAPTOP), but had to use the IP address - as anytime I tried to use the name (including trying to ping computers from my laptop via the name) it would not work. Interestingly enough, I could ping the other machines from my new Dell Desktop by simply typing in either the name of the other computers OR the IP address..... (both worked on the DESKTOP - not the laptop though
OK, here is the result from my NEW DELL/Desktop running (XP Pro - Name: RAsDellComputer- guess I was a bit surprised to see that this machine wasn't the master browser, even though I am really not sure what that means - but that is my main computer (and the one that nobody seems to be able to see :-

Well, as you noted, the 3 browstat listings gave us something to think about.
And some disturbing and unexpected results.
I'll explain briefly what we're looking at. I apologise if I'm stating obvious
stuff.
A browser (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) is a computer that keeps
an inventory of what services (servers, shares, domains, and workgroups) can be
seen from any domain or workgroup, and provides that information to any computer
asking (ie you, when you look in Network Neighborhood). A master browser
gathers that information, and passes it to the backup browsers. The master
browser is elected from all the browsers in the domain / workgroup, primarily
based upon operating system (WinNT/2K/XP have equal status, over Win9x/ME), and
secondarily based upon how long the computer has been online.
There can be only one master browser (duh) in a domain or workgroup. Any
browser that is not elected the master browser becomes a backup browser, and is
fed the network inventory by the master browser. Basically, in a domain /
workgroup that contains only Win2K/XP computers, the master browser becomes the
one computer that's been up the longest.
If the master browser was to go offline, it could take as long as 51 minutes
before its absence would be discovered, and a new master browser elected.

browser forever. As long as the other two computers stay up while its being
restarted.

Your browstat results are disturbing because they're not consistent. You and I,
coincidentally, have very similar workgroup inventories - one Win2K, and 2

See how consistent and symmetrical my results are?
Let's force a master browser election on your LAN. Shutdown all of your
computers simultaneously. Decide which computer you want as your master browser,
and bring it up first, after all are shutdown. After all 3 are back online,
rerun browstat on all 3 computers, and post results back here.

Windows XP Network >> Workgroup displays nothing on laptop with XP Pro
Chuck - I have tried something different based upon some suggestions of a friend at work and some of the reading you have provided and others have noted in their posts - and am now a bit closer. I set up an lmhost file on all the machines and now can see everyone on each machine - EXCEPT, the other two machines still can't see the new dell. However, now all the workgroup computers show from each box - except my laptop and my desktop still can't see the new desktop - BUT they can indeed hit it and connect via the ip address AND now the name of the machines :-
So, continuing to get a bit closer - thanks again much for all your help and should you have any final ideas on the desktop that now one can see (XP Pro) via the network neighborhood sure would appreciate your help. At least now I have all the basic functionality i really need

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio Files in MM2I have created 6 different MM2 project files for a family
wedding. I have added wav files onto the audio/music
track and muted the audio portion of the video clip.
Everything worked fine, the clips played fine on the
computer and the audio sounded great.
I imported these MM2 wmv files into Roxio ECD 6 and made
a DVD project file to burn. I chose to burn to a DVD+RW
so that I could make changes if necessary. When the DVD
was played on my DVD player, the audio had a distinctive
popping, or cracking sound. There were some parts of the
project where the audio portion of the video clip was
left intact and used instead of the wav file. That
sounded OK, but when the parts with the wav file played
again, there was the popping.
Any thoughts on why there would be the difference in
sound quality between the burned wav file and the
imbedded audio of the video clip? Is it in my player, or
how it was burned?

- Windows XP Setup >> User ID doesn't appear on XP welcome screenI removed several programs from my computer (Gator &
Adobe vs 5.0). I also installed MS's latest XP Patch.
When I reloaded my computer, my User ID wasn't on the XP
Pro welcome screen. I logged in as administrator and
went to Control Panel - user accounts. The ID wan't there
either. I attempted to recreate my user ID, but am told
by XP that the user account already exists.
How can I
1) Reestablish the account so that I can log back in
using it?
or
2) Delete and recreate it?

Why is it that when I try to get the HTML page of
whatever is on the window by using VIEW>SOURCE on the
toolbar, nothing happens?
I was able to do that before. What could have happened?
Earlier today I tried it again, VIEW>SOURCE and the HTML
page popped up. I thought that it got restored somehow so
I closed that page and tried to do it again from another
window. No luck. I went back to the window where it
actually worked and this time the HTML page didn't pop up.
Can anybody help please. I am using XP.

- Windows XP Setup >> Quick question re: F.A.S.T. file transfer programSaw the discussion of a couple days ago about transfering files from an
older Windows computer to a WinXP machine. I expect that it will transfer
files, but does it transfer an installed program? I.e. if I have a program
I installed into an older computer and it made registry changes etc. on that
old machine will the FAST transfer program bring it to the new machine such
that I can just click on the executable program and expect it to run?
I'm guessing it just transfers files like word processing files I made,
pictures I generated, etc. and not a functioning already installed program.
Simply transferring the contents of a folder to a new machine won't make the
program run on the new machine. The program needs to be installed, not just
files transferred. Right?

- Windows XP >> Auto-run on insertion of USB pen driveI've just been asked by my boss if the following is possible.
As a promotion, we want to give away a USB pen drive (aka "memory
stick"). These will have a small PowerPoint presentation
pre-installed.
Is it possible to run these automatically on insertion of the drive
into the USB port? My initial thought is "no", on account of security
implications.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> Write Data on DVDI just installed a DVD-R on my desktop. I would like to do my backup on DVDs
to take advantage of morespace than a regular CD (4.5GB). I try to do a drag
and drop but it will not recognize or copy the files. Is there a good
software out there to accomplish what I want to do. I tried Windows Media
Player and did not work.
Please let me know if there is something I can do within Windows XP. I am
running XP _ Pro.

- Windows XP >> Win xp boots to logo and stopsHello. I have been struggling with this problem for a few days now and CAN
NOT BRING Windows back (XP home eddition on a dell puter). Windows hangs just
before login screen (I see blue screen with Windows XP logo and mouse
pointer). Before that if press F8 I can't even get into the safe mode. It
shows safe mode in each corners of a black page like it wants to bring it
then it goes back to the blue logo screen. I have tried many many many times
to boot with XP cd but it does not do anything. I ran diagnostic At one point
I got this error code 0F00:136C which I googled it and everyone points to the
CD-Rom but further test of the CD-Rom and DVD came out "test passed". I can't
even boot from the floppy. Appreciate any suggestion that might point me to
the right direction!

- Windows XP Setup >> windows xp freezeI have a Gateway laptop that came loaded with Windows XP Home Edition. After
about 1 1/2 years of running fine, it began to randomly freeze. The
manufacturer has been unable to help me. I've done the following:
- clean install of Windows XP
- wrote zeros to the drive and installed Windows XP
- ran diagnostics on hardware components (including a 3 hour system load
test)
- set BIOS to default settings
Nothing seems to get rid of the random freezes that I am experiencing.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

for this user account as I do for the primary account. I would also like
future changes with the primary to be reflected in the secondary account. I
