- Windows XP >> Internet Activity... HELP!This is driving me to distraction. I have a broadband cable connection with an icon for
the connection in the system notification area. The problem began today. The Local Area
Connection icon now blinks every 2 seconds or so, and the Status says that I am sending 2
Packets each time the icon blinks. No packets are being received. I use Zone Alarm for a
Firewall, and am very careful. I did a system restore back to 2 days ago when all was
fine, but that did not fix the problem. I scanned with my antivirus program, with latest
definitions, and nothing was found. I scanned with Ad-Aware, PC Spyware Doctor, Spy
Sweeper, HiJackThis, and the utility Autoruns, and could not find anything. I looked at
MSCONFIG and there were not any new entries in Startup. None of my software or utilities
are set to automatically update (I do it all manually, so it is not something trying to
connect to update). I did not install any new software prior to the problem. I even set
Zone Alarm to ask if Outlook Express wants to connect, just in case it is a Trojan trying
to send out spam. But, no Zone Alarm alerts pop up, except when I use Outlook Express. I
really do not want to have to do a clean install to get rid of this problem. Does anyone
have any ideas?

- Windows XP Security >> Home network, cant browse internet on XPGood Morning,
I have a friend with a home network that has 6 machines. There are a couple different OS's running acroos the 6 machines, Win 98, Win XP home, Win XP Pro, and MAC OS X. There is an 8 port Linksys router, routing IP from a cable modem. There are no restrictions set up on the router. The router is running DHCP
The problem is that one of the users ( a Win XP Home machine ) cannot browse the internet. I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, sometimes one of the lines will time out, but still get a response on the line after. I tried releasing the IP information, then renewing. I am getting an IP address, and all the DNS servers on renew. I tried flushing the DNS, tried clearing the cache.
My gut says there is something up with the DNS, but I can't figure it out. All the other machines are setup for DHCP and have no problems at all. Norton is on there , but that doesn't completely rule out viri
Any Thoughts???

- Windows XP Security >> XP PasswordHello, my kid was playing with my laptop, and changed the
password for the XP logon password. I can't get in. I
still have my passwords in my bios, but does that help. I
don't have any of the original CD's that came with it, so
how do I get back in? Do I have to order a recovery dick
or something. Thank you for any help.

- Windows XP Hardware >> dvd drives (rom and writer) suddenly not working after Norton issuesI currently use XP. I had Norton SystemWorks and a trial
version of Norton Internet Security on my computer. I
bought the full version of Internet Security. I
uninstalled the trial version, but then got a message
that said "ccRegVfy. exe failed to start because
ccTrust.dll was not found." At the same time, my dvd rom
and writer became unrecognizable when I went to My
Computer. I tried uninstalling all Norton components,
which is no simple task, but I still get the same
message. System Restore was no help, it won't restore to
any point before the Norton initial removal. Has anyone
else had a similar problem? I can't install either
Norton (SystemWorks or Internet Security) in the hope
that it will fix the problem itself because my roms don't
work. Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Hardware >> serial ata fast disk big cache shutdown problemI have bought Serial ata maxtor 6Y080MO disk and epox
kra2+ mobo. Windows 98se and XP installed fast without
problems and work fine but After i shutdown sytem at

shutdown time is to short and data from my disks cache
arent written to disk before shutdown.
I have found patch for windows 98se and now everything is
ok.
But i can't find patch under windows XP . I have searched
registry to find something like CacheWriteDelay (as it is
under win98+patch) but it is not somethink like that.
ps. If If I chcange time to kill apps and services for
example to 30 seconds (30000 milisekonds) it doesnt make
any diffrence and system shutdown is very fast .
Please help me

The hour glass comes on for a very long time as though working, then on top
next to where it says control panel it will say "not responding." I tried a
system restore from an earlier date, but that didn't help. I was trying to
open it so i could install a few other fonts to use, but i can't even get the
folder to open, so if you can help, need additional info to help, please
contact me at jazzy_alicia@yahoo.com i would greatly appreciate it.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows logs in and immediately logs outI cant't log in. After entering username and password appears that
"Loading your settings" window, then just after loading settings (I
think they are loaded successfully: for instance appearance and colors
of window change and "Welcome" sound plays) appears window "Saving your
settings". And session finishes. This happens for any user account.
Perhaps something that is started by Windows cause it to log out. I was
able to find a tool and removed everything from "Run", "RunOnce", etc
(only in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE). Nothing changed. How can I determine what
caused such behaviour or fix it?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Cannot import songs from computerI used to be able to import songs/audio from my computer into Windows Movie
Maker. Now it won't let me, saying;
C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah\My Documents\My Music\Untitled - 29-05-07
(1)\01 - Track 1.mp3 could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or
is corrupted.
How can i sort this problem out. I've read about converting to WMA format
but how do i do this without buying or downloading software?! Help!

- Windows XP Network >> IP Addressing IssuesI have a client of mine that is having a lot of problems accessing the
Internet. Her set up is this: D-Link cable modem/wireless router w/4 port
switch. The switch is wired to a Mac Airport for a wireless Mac and a PC
(XP) notebook and a wired desktop. They all work fine except for the
desktop. For some reason, the desktop is having problems getting an IP from
from the router. When it does get one, it is only for a brief moment and
loses it. When you try to re-aquire an IP, I get an error stating that
access is denied - IP's are all zeros. I have tried to add a Linksys
wireless USB adapter instead of CAT5 cable. That does not work. Restarting
does not work. I have tried everything. Now for the kicker. When I brought
the workstation to my shop and set it up on my wireless (Linksys 8 port
router with a Linksys G access point), the workstation works fine. I let it
run for two days without a problem and great speed. I am at a loss as to why
this is happening. The only common denominator is that AirPort. Could that
be causing a conflict somehow?
- 15
- Windows XP Support >> Windows Installer - XP SP1No matter what new app I try to install, if it has an MSI file associated
with it, I get the following error:
'This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package
exists and that you can access it. Contact the application vendor to verify
that this is a valid Windows Installer package'.
It use to work (once upon a time). I have searched just about every related
KB article to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Windows XP >> Save As in IE allows Bitmap only
When I right-click on a picture on any web site and click on "Save As", it
only allows me to save the picture as a bitmap. Same web sites on other PCs
allow the picture to be saved as JPEG. It used to work on my PC up until a
few weeks ago. Any suggestions?

Clear your temp internet files and try again. Should work fine after that.

- Windows XP >> Takes forever to shut down.I'm running Windows XP Home SP2 and have all the latest updates. DOTNET
runtime 1.1.4322.2032 SP1 and 2.0.50727.42 RTM (Visual Studio.NET 2005
RTM / SQL Server 2005 RTM) are both installed. I'm also running ADO
Database Runtime v.2.81.1128.0 and Internet Explorer v.7.0.6000.16441.
I did have .NET 3 installed, but removed it.
The problem is that my computer frequently takes forever to shut down.
I'll tell it to "Turn Off" and walk away, then come back minutes later
and it's still stuck in the "Saving your setttings" mode. Eventually, it
turns off but the time required for it to do this is totally
unacceptable. In fact, I often get P.O.ed and out of frustration, hold
in the power button until it goes off. This has never hurt anything to
this point, but probably will screw up some files at some point.
Note that my problem is NOT that the computer reboots when I want it to
shut down. The problem is that the computer takes an extremely prolonged
amount of time to shut down.
I've Googled around and found several suggestions like the ones at this
site:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1590&page=32
but none of them worked.
I am not running Roxio Easy CD creator of any kind and since a total
wipe and reinstall of my hard drive, never have.
Although I'm running an NVidia based video card, I'm not running the
Nvidia Driver Helper Service.
I have disabled Terminal Services.
I tried installing and running (it autoruns in the background) the
Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en
or if you prefer:
http://tinyurl.com/2h3yl
and although it helps, what it does is to speed up the shutdown time
consistently but it still takes longer to shut down than I want and does
so every time. At least before, the computer would shut off quickly once
in a while. As a result, I have removed UPHCS and now am hoping that
somebody in this group can help me figure out what the problem is.
By the way, I'm not the only person having this problem. Ever since
Vista came out, I've noticed that more and more of my friends and family
members who run XP (Pro OR Home) are having the same problem.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
TIA.

- Windows XP Support >> Hard Drive QuestionI'm running XP pro and I've added two SATA drives to the system for use as
source drives for video production. I'm using the Disk Manager (for the
first time) to format the drives and I know I need to format the drives at
64K for best video performance. But it's assigning them as dynamic simple
drives, is this also correct for optimal performance? I don't want to set up
a RAID solution, I need each video drive to operate independently so I can
run two shifts on the editor.

the answer in the various XP help pages. I am the

I have tried turning off my anto virus program and

appreciated.
