- Windows XP Security >> XP Sp2 questionI have to install Xp SP2 in our clients.
I have to make sure that settings are there such as ICMP should be allowed,
Firewall is enabled and Block Pops is set to medium with some few exceptions.
Is there a way to predefine these settings so I'm sure I got standard
settings for all.
Thank you

- Windows XP Network >> Keep losing network gateway settingI am running a "windows xp" PC with 2 network cards. 1 connecting to a
192.168 network and 1 connecting to a 10.232 network. Both have
gateways which supply external intranets and internet, one of them thru
a proxi server.
All is well, except one of the gateways keeps clearing itself. If I do
an IPCONFIG, it has gone, but it's still there in the settings. If I do
a repair, it all fires up again and reappears in the IPCONFIG.
Any kind soul who can help please?
Thanks!

- customize >> xp style is goneOk, I've tried almost everything what I found here, browsed through
all these (and similar) ''No Windows XP Style Appearance'' topics ,and
tried suggested solutions, read most of kellyscorner and downloaded
stuff- but still no xp style for my windows and buttons.
My start menu is ''shaped'' in xp style, but start icon is not, also ,
all windows and buttons are in classical style.
When I click on desktop >properties>themes>windows xp....it just changes
my desktop picture, but the rest of it stays the same, when I click
desktop >properties>appearance> ....there is no windows xp style. Now
there's no classical2!Windows and buttons are grayed
p.s.One question-should this box be checked, when I run
services.msc ,under Themes>properties>log on>allow service to interact
with desktop?does this has to do with it?
Please, is there solution, I really want my xp style back.
Thanx in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> Annoying "computer must be restarted" messageMy computer did an automatic update last week and ever since then whenever
I turn it on I get the little window which tells me "the computer must be
restarted to install the update". Any idea how I can get rid of this
message for good (I've restarted the computer dozens of times already)?
Many thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Setup >> Opening FoldersOn my laptop when I try to open folders instead of them opening up I get a
search box. For example, when I double click "My Computer" it shows me what
is on my computer, but when I double click "Local Disk (C:)" I get the
typical search window instead of a list of what's on my hard drive. When I
right click Local Disk (C:) I get a list of options. I noticed the first
option is "Search" instead of "Open". So I have to right click every time
and scroll down to open. The crazy thing is it didn't always do this. But I
don't know what I could have done to cause this and I can't figure out how to
fix it. I have a Toshiba Laptop with some proprietary controls and programs
running XP Home Edition.

- Windows XP Security >> No Security Events showing....I have a Win 2000 server running as a DC with AD.
In the event viewer there are no events in the Security Log folder. There
are events in all the other folders. Is there a reason this would be empty?
It looks like it's configured like the rest of the Events.
Am I missing something obvious here?
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Registry issuesLast night, I was very low on disk space. I decided to delete some programs
that I didn't need anymore. Through control panel, I deleted things like .net
framework, a music program, quicktime, and some other things. I noticed at
one point my desktop do some kind of motion, but I ignored it. I restarted my
computer and logged back on to find I couldn't use the internet explorer
button and it was missing and some other shortcuts. I did a system restore
and I was able to get them back.
I updated a few programs on my computer that needed to be upgraded. I tried
to download Adobe Reader 7.0.8 and the flash player 9, photoshop trial and I
kept have registry problems. I downloaded some registry cleaners to try, and
it helped solve another problem I had prior to this with a pestrap situation.
But it didn't help my installation problems. Now, certain things I can't
install because of a HKEY problem. I tried to delete the value/key, but it
wont let me and some keys it cannot open. I installed Windows OneLive Care to
see if it could clean up any viruses etc.. and it hasn't helped and now I
can't delete it. I keep clicking remove and nothing happens. And now when I
use the internet, some images don't display.
What can I do?

- Windows XP Security >> Legit update?I got the following e-mail today. It does not look legit
and I don't see any updates that i need posted on the
windows update page. Any Suggestions?
Kevin
The Following patch update is recommended for all windows
users.
Win95,win98,winme,and winxp.
This patch is designed to block a major security hole in
all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
All that is required is the attached file "installer.exe"
be downloaded to your computer onc
e on your computer
use the search fucnction to find the file "installer.exe"
double click to install.
Once installed your computer will be r
eturned to being as safe as it was designed from the
factory.
Thank you for your time and understanding.

- Windows XP Network >> Unable to access new computer1- I have five computers running on an Ethernet and
wireless LAN that have been working and communicating
just fine.
2- I added a sixth brand new notebook computer to the
working Ethernet/Wireless network. It uses Microsoft XP
with the latest SP2 upgrade as it's operating system.
3- I can connect to the Internet and print (both via
Ethernet or Wireless) through the network with the new
computer just fine.
4- The new computer can see and communicate with all the
other computers via My Network Places just fine.
5- The other five computers can not see my new computer
through their own "My Network Places".
6- If I go into any of the five network computers and
open My Network Places, the new computer is not shown.
Clicking on "View workgroup computers" will then show
the new computer.
Clicking on the new computer's icon will bring up a
window that says: " \\New computer is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.
Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible
reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour
restrictions, or a policy restriction has been
enforced".
7- I ran Network Setup Wizard on the new computer to
fully enable file sharring.
8- The new computer has been setup to "Share" it's
entire "C" drive with it's share name as C$ and Maximum
allowed User limit.
9- Somehow I think that it might have something to do
with SP2's Firewall as I am allowed into the network
system from the new computer, but can not access the new
computer from any of the other network computers?

- Windows XP Support >> Trying to Network two XP Home computersI`ve been trying to Network two XP Home computers but am running into a
strange problem.
I can "see" each computer on the other, and even the shared folders and
Printers/fax, but on computer #2, I can *NOT* access the shared Folders
residing
on computer #1, however the Printer(s)/Fax are accessable!!
On computer #1, I can see *AND* access the shared Folders etc. residing on
computer
#2 !!
When I try to access a shared Folder on computer #2 from computer #1, I get
this error message:
"(Shared Folder) is not accessable, You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact administrator etc. Not enough server storage is
available to process this command".
The problem lies (I think?) within computer #1, because when I`m on computer
#1, with Computer #2 offline, I can click on "View Workgroup computers", I
then see same (sole) Computer, ie. #1 Asus (Mattswinxp). I then click to
open Computer #1 Asus (Mattswinxp), and I am presented with *all* the shared
Folders/Printers and Faxes etc. shared on this computer (#1).
I then click to open any "Shared Folder" in computer #1, and I get this same
error message as before: (quote) \\Mattswinxp\SharedDocs is not accessable.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator etc. Not enough server storage is available to process this
command (end quote).
Mind you, I *AM* the administrator of this same (#1) computer, and I *CAN*
open this same shared folder while under "My Network Places"/ Local Network,
but yet *NOT* when trying to access a shared folder under "View Workgroup
Computers" on this very same (#1) computer!!
Can someone explain to me what is wrong here?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Removing unwanted deviceI have a WinXP Home laptop (Dell) that recently started displaying the add hardware wizard after boot up. It says that it's found an infrared device and is prompting me for the device drivers. However, there is no infrared device built into this machine, and I have absolutely no additional hardware installed. When I try to remove this device in the Device Manager, XP tells me that it is a device that is necessary to boot the machine and it won't remove it. Dell's support tells me that my only option is to reinstall the machine, but I find this unacceptable.
This is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and it has no options for IrDA devices in the BIOS.
Why is XP trying to install a device that's not really there?

- Windows XP Setup >> Example of PrinUIEntry use requiredI'm attempting to script the installation of network printers remote for
Windows XP and have succeeded in remotely installing printer for local
printer ports.
However I can not get the same commands to work for attaching network
printers.
I have followed the instrcutions in the help file "rundll32
printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /?"
But there are no examples for "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in" which
is supposed to be the command to "add network printer connection" but I'm
not bright enough to figure it out without an example.
Any help would be appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Taskbar (vertical) shrinkingI've been having the same problem as the post below, and
I'm wondering whether anyone else has found a better
solution or knows if Microsoft is working on this bug?
TIA
Phil
Finally, I found the source of the problem myself and I
want you to know it because I think it's a bug in Windows
XP.
It looks like the language bar doesn't work properly when
using the Windows XP theme. In particular, it brings the
problem that I experienced, that is: when using a
vertical taskbar, the width of the taskbar reduces each
time I logoff. To come to this conclusion, I tried these
different combinations:
- Using the Windows XP theme with the language bar
in the toolbar: the taskbar shrinks on logoff.
- Using the Windows XP theme without the language
bar in the toolbar: no problem.
- Using the Windows Classic theme with the language
bar in the toolbar: no problem.
- Using the Windows Classic theme without the
language bar in the toolbar: no problem.
Now that you know the source of the issue, I hope
Microsoft can resolve it as soon as possible. For the
time being, I'll simply use the language bar outside of
the taskbar to avoid the problem.
